The series of changes in WhatsApp’s privacy policy continues, a saga that began earlier this year. When it seemed clear that, barring government interference, the non-acceptance of the privacy policy gradually limit the capabilities of WhatsApp, the company has completely changed the discourse on its website.
As stated now in the Help Center of WhatsApp, “No user accounts will be deleted or access to WhatsApp features will be deleted on May 15 due to this update.” In other words, accept the privacy policy or don’t. will not have any changes, for the moment, in the functionality of WhatsApp
For the moment, without limits
Earlier this month, WhatsApp detailed its roadmap for those who resist accepting the privacy policy, outlining a gradual suspension of duties. First of all, the list of chats is gone, you won’t be able to make or receive calls anymore, and later you won’t be able to receive messages or receive notifications. That is to say, little by little, WhatsApp became unusable.
The speech has changed again, and not for the first time. After the initial controversy since WhatsApp announced its privacy policy earlier this year, the company retracted at the end of the same month of January: temporarily deleted the notice. It didn’t take long for the review to come back.
Finally, May 15 has arrived and while the notice may not appear, the phasing out of features continued and included European users. The privacy policy continues and notices will continue to appear, but not accepting the policy will not result in limitation of functionality, for the time being.
For those who have not yet done so, we will continue to display a notification on WhatsApp in which we offer more information about it and remind you to review and accept it. At this time, we do not plan to persist these reminders or limit the functionality of the app.
The previous excerpt, excerpt from the section What will happen after the effective date? of the WhatsApp Help Center understands the important distinction of “at the momentI mean, there’s still room for a new chapter in this soap opera. Reminders aren’t meant to be persistent either.
In other words, those who have accepted the new privacy policy will continue in its terms and those who do not will remain bound to the previous policy. In practice, those who have accepted – the majority of users, says WhatsApp – will be able to use WhatsApp as usual and those who have not, but with sporadic notices to do so.
