The Android console market can be difficult to navigate, given the wide variety of models available; To top it off, many stores offer “clones” and copies of better models, which are difficult to compare with each other. But among all this ‘jungle’, there is a brand that stands out from the rest, Retroid.
Retroid has managed to make a name for itself in this niche market, with quirky models like the Nintendo DS-inspired Retroid Pocket Flip; but its most popular model is the Retroid Pocket, which is already in its third version.
Therefore, it is a surprise that now the company has announced the Retroid Pocket 2S, a bit of a misleading name as it’s an improvement over the Pocket 3 in some ways. In fact, it is so called because the design is identical to the Pocket 2 (Retroid will have reused the chassis), although its components are closer to those of the third generation.

Therefore, we are faced with a console with a familiar design, but with significant advantages over previous models. The big change is inside, since the new console uses a Unisoc T610 processor; According to gamers who have been able to test it, this SoC is similar to the T618 used in the Pocket 3 in terms of performance, but it brings energy efficiency gains; which will result in a longer battery time and less heat emitted when the processor is working at its maximum.
For graphics, it relies on a 614MHz Mali G52MC2, and it can come with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 128GB of internal storage; we will have a card slot to expand it if we want. Regarding the Pocket 2, the great novelty will be on the screen, which promises a better image quality, although the resolution was not specified; Its size will be 3.5 inches and it will be touch sensitive to be able to use the touch interface and games. One of the novelties that has been better received concerns controls; specifically in the levers, which now use the Hall effect both to improve sensitivity and to avoid the so-called “drift” that occurs in some portable consoles such as the Nintendo Switch.
Retroid Pocket 2S Announcement
So while the Pocket 2S can’t compare to the Pocket 3 in terms of raw power when using an inferior chip, most users probably won’t notice it in the games these consoles are intended for. In addition, this will allow Retroid to offer a price very close to the definition of “good deal”: the Retroid Pocket 2S will be available for $99 in its 3GB and 32GB version, and for $119 in its 4GB and 128GB version. There will also be a special metal edition for $149. The launch will take place on July 25; In Europe it can probably be obtained through import stores or through Amazon, where models such as the Retroid Pocket 2 and the Retroid Pocket 3 are already available.
