For several weeks, rumors of all kinds have continued to appear focused on a very specific, unexpected Samsung device: augmented reality glasses. Its existence was not a secret in itself.since the main companies involved in the matter (i.e. the South Korean company, Google and Qualcomm) left little information.
Despite all these leaks, none of them managed to predict the announcement that has just been made. Google and Samsung simultaneously unveiled Android XR, a new operating system that aims to deliver a unique augmented reality experience. And not only: Samsung viewer will be the first device in history to use it.
“Project Moohan” will be the first headset to use Android XR
Rumors aside, the announcement comes a few weeks before the end of 2024, and the truth is that we could be facing a revolution. As Google itself explains, Android XR will be integrated into Gemini providing users with an experience that understands both their intentions and the world around them, offering all types of interactions.
Precisely, Gemini will allow us to have conversations with her about what we see and also to control our device. On the Google page we can see a visual example of how this platform works, with a search using “Circle to search” from the same interface.
The partnership between Google and Samsung has been close for several years now, but the next step will take place here, in augmented reality. The first viewer in history to use this system will be that of the South Korean firm. Samsung already gives it, through one of its web pages, a code name: 'Moohan Project'.
Samsung has not yet given any type of data or technical specifications about this viewer, although it assures that it will be equipped with latest generation screensPassthrough functions and natural multimodal input. This is a real blow that will arrive with the intention of competing with the Apple viewer.
We'll have to wait a little longer to see them work, although Samsung will likely show them to the public sometime in 2025.
