In the short time it has existed, OpenAI has managed to carve out a place for itself in the competitive technology sector, thanks to ChatGPT and its great advances in generative AI; But it is no less true that, since the launch of ChatGPT, the organization has not suffered such a blow. In fact, its competitors are catching up with their language models, like Google with Gemini.
The worst part is that OpenAI doesn't keep the promises it makes; Its CEO, Sam Altman, has a reputation for promising a revolution every few weeks without really seeing any noticeable changes in its products. A good example of one of these “revolutions” would be the new advanced voice mode with vision for ChatGPTwhich was introduced seven months ago but has shown no signs of life since.
That ends today, with the launch of “Advanced Voice Mode with Vision”; but it's not even a complete version, since It will not yet be available in Europe nor the rest of the European Union, and ChatGPT Enterprise users will have to wait until January to try it.
Despite this limited release, OpenAI once again stated that this new mode could completely change the way we use ChatGPT and AI in general. The key to this new mode is that it allows for natural conversations with AI using both voice and sight.
In the demonstration broadcast by OpenAI on its official YouTube channel, it is shown how the AI is able to understand up to 50 languages and participate in conversations with several people at the same time in their own language, identifying them by help of the mobile's front camera.
The new ChatGPT mode is capable of use mobile camera to get a video, both of your interlocutor and the objects around them. During the demonstration, the AI commented that the presenter had a Santa hat without him needing to say anything, and also understood that he wanted to make coffee after seeing, through the camera, that everything was ready. The AI then performed a tutorial on how to brew coffee.

In Europe, ChatGPT's advanced voice mode has been available since last October; This mode is similar, but adds the ability to use the mobile camera to add more context to our doubts. In this way, it seems that OpenAI and Google are moving in the same direction, since just yesterday Google presented its advances with Project Astra, a new AI designed for mobile phones and smart glasses, capable of using cameras to offer help in all types of situations.
