The The first rumors we heard about AirTags came with a beta version of iOS 13, that is to say in the summer of 2019. Apple finally unveiled its little tracking device a few days ago and it is already available for purchase, however, now that the first users are receiving them, we found that they were ready for a long, long time.
According to the images shared on Twitter by some users who bought them, in the papers included in the box of the accessory which is a keychain for the AirTags, clearly indicates 2019
So the AirTag box says 2020.
The leather keychain says 2019.

These documents show that all Apple trademarks are registered and usually indicate the year that this paper was printed. Well these key chains are manufactured since 2019.
And in the AirTag box itself 2020 is indicated as date of manufacture. In other words, AirTags were made and stored for a long time until Apple decided to launch them.
It comes to confirm almost all rumors we had heard of AirTags. Apple had them ready but was waiting for the perfect time to launch them.
The original plan might have been to introduce them a year ago, but with the pandemic, the company delayed its launchIt didn’t make much sense to throw a device to locate lost items if you couldn’t get out of the house.
The AirTag can be a very interesting device full of abilities to find any object. Apple does not recommend using them to locate people, children, or pets. It is a device for finding items like a backpack or purse.
