A year ago, MediaTek overtook Qualcomm as the leading manufacturer of processors for mobile devices. The Chinese company had been able to capture the need to create low-cost processors that mobile brands needed so as not to increase the cost of their entry-level smartphones. Qualcomm was increasingly focusing on 5G processors and chips for more expensive models. And this is proven today.
MediaTek is getting better and better
In a study published by Counterpoint research We see how MediaTek has colonized entry and mid-range Android mobiles with high-performance processors at reasonable prices.
On this segment, only UNISOC presents a certain competition, in particular in the very cheap terminals, those which cost less than 100 dollars.
Below 300 dollars, the most important price segment in countries like Europe, MediaTek leads the market, although this difference is negative when we increase the prices.
In terminals over 300 dollars, Qualcomm continues to be the benchmark, something that increases as the price of the mobile is higher. Even so, below 500 Euros, MediaTek continues to have some presence, although above that figure its market share is a testament.
Qualcomm cannot be trusted
Knowing that most people buy mobiles for around 300 or 400 dollars, one would think that MediaTek will have greater brand recognition, and users will have fewer qualms about buying a top of the range with a chip from this company.
We ourselves have seen how mobile phones equipped with MediaTek processors such as the OnePlus Nord CE 2 or the Realme 9 Pro Plus perform much better than terminals equipped with Qualcomm processors at the same price.
Processors like the Dimensity 9000 provide more than enough performance for most users, and phones using it are significantly cheaper than those with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
And the other manufacturers?
The rest of the processor manufacturers, such as Samsung, Google and Huawei, only have a notable presence above 600 dollars. Exynos chips are mainly those that offer an alternative to Qualcomm internationally, and to Huawei’s Hisilicon in countries like China.
Google appears in the charts with its Tensor thanks to the good sales of the Pixel 6, but it is still a very small player.
