For the first time, Apple is selling two very large phones. On the one hand there is the iPhone 14 Pro Max from $1,469 / 28,999 MXN and, on the other, the iPhone 14 Plus from $1,009 / 20,999 MXN.
And, while there are obvious differences between the two mobiles, they may not be as significant as you think. Here are six reasons to save $460 / $8,000 MXN and choose the iPhone 14 Plus over the Pro Max.
The screen is still excellent
Like the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, the iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max have identical 6.7-inch screens. However, they are not exactly the same. The iPhone 14 Pro Max display has several features not available on the Plus: ProMotion with a 120Hz refresh rate (vs. 60Hz) and an always-on display.
These are ideal features that Pro Max users will love. However, if until now you had an iPhone 12 or XR, the screen of the Plus will be just as good as that of your old mobile, only bigger.
You’ve survived all these years without ProMotion or an always-on display, so you won’t know what you’re missing, and the iPhone 14 Plus screen is still great.
Battery life is really superior
We all know iPhones have fantastic battery life, but Apple claims the iPhone 14 Plus has the best battery life of them all.
We will soon be able to check it for ourselves, but the first Comments that came out corroborate Apple’s estimates. According to experts, the battery lasts between 20 and 21 hours in video tests, which is an hour longer than the iPhone 14 Pro Max in similar tests.
In the real world, the iPhone 14 Plus is likely to deliver several days of use. According to Allison Johnson, of The edge“A day of moderate use with about two hours with the screen on and a lot of time away from a Wi-Fi network only consumed 25% of the battery.”
So if you are going to replace your iPhone 11 or even your iPhone 13, the improvement will be amazing: you won’t have to worry about looking for a charger anymore.
Cameras are still great
Aside from the dynamic island, the main difference between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 14 Plus is the rear camera. On the iPhone 14 Pro Max we have a 48MP main lens and a 12MP telephoto lens, which we don’t find on the 14 Plus.
In fact, the iPhone 14 has a very similar camera to the iPhone 13, featuring a dual-camera setup with 12MP wide-angle and 12MP ultra-wide. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get great results with the Plus.
The processor is basically the same
Apple has split the iPhone 13 A15 processor into two types: a 4-core GPU for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, and a 5-core GPU for the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.
It goes one step further with the iPhone 14. The Pro models use Apple’s new A16 processor, while the iPhone 14 Plus has the top-end version of last year’s A15.
But while it sounds like a great update, it really isn’t. In our tests, the A16 isn’t much faster than the A15, and that’s not something you’ll notice in day-to-day use. So if you buy an iPhone 14 Plus, it won’t be slower than a 14 Pro Max.
Dynamic Island is not yet a must-have feature
The main novelty of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is not in the Materialbut in the Software. Dynamic Island, which is a feature of the new camera cutout) is by far the most interesting and intriguing of the new phone and the one that will be featured in iPhones for years to come.
But it’s not quite complete yet. Most of the time, the dynamic island is just as static as the notchand even when iOS 16.1 arrives with Live Activities, it will take some time before developers properly update their apps to take advantage of it.
It will be a few months before all of this happens and until then, we’ll all be keeping an eye out for the iPhone 15 Plus, which will also likely adopt the Dynamic Island.
could save your life
This year, Apple introduced two new features for iPhone: Car Crash Detection and Satellite Emergency SOS. These two features could save your life one day, and they are available on all iPhone 14 models, Pro or not.
