Memorizing combinations of letters and numbers, mixed with capital letters and symbols, will be a thing of the past, because access keys or access keys will eventually supplant the passwords we have used until now. This promise, which seemed somewhat distant, is now a reality: Google has enabled passwordless login for all accounts. And now you can use it, all you need is your smartphone.
Among the usual advice when creating a new password is always the combination of letters, symbols and numbers that are as far from the patterns as any thief could guess. And, since the ideal is to choose one password per service, the head ends up not being given; which leads to the use of password managers, very useful applications that carry a great risk: if someone accesses the vault with the master password, we are lost
The option to look for: “Ignore password if possible”
Google announced the availability of Access Keys in all user accounts starting today May 3, a date that serves as a preview for an important commemoration: password day; It is celebrated on the first Thursday of every May. In addition to the announcement on the Google website, chances are you received an email in your Gmail account informing you that support for access keys will begin to replace the use of passwords. .
Beyond the paradox of celebrating the beginning of the death of passwords just as their use is commemorated, the good news is that you can now use passwords in your Google Account: the company has enabled the functionality on the server side. By default you will have the passwordless login disabled, but a few steps will suffice to activate it:
- Access your Google account and enter the security tab.
- Look for the option “Ignore password if possibleand enters its menu.
- Log in as usual, with your Google password. Later, you probably won’t need this step.
- Activate the option, you have already configured it.
- When you register a new Android phone with your Google account, the company automatically creates a password for that device. You can confirm the keys you created in this link.
Once you have set up the Google account to avoid passwords as much as possible your mobile will receive a notification each time you try to log in to a website, application or service. Of course, not all have implemented the password, so you may need to keep using the password longer. In case you could save it, Google will warn you at the beginning of the session: you just need to have your device with the password nearby.
Besides Android, it is also possible to embed the password in a Fido security key, such as Google’s Titan. The operation of Secure Unlock is very similar: simply insert the key into the device to activate the password; thus avoiding the memorization of the password.
