A question that many of us may ask ourselves at any time. What to do with this old iPad that can no longer be updated? You answered this question Konrad Dybcioand the result is most surprising: give them new life running a Linux distribution.
A project in its infancy, but interesting
As our colleagues from Xataka tell us, Konrad, a Linux developer, cooperated with another Twitter user, quaack723
Replacing the iOS system of the iPad, as we remember only a few years ago iPadOS was available, Konrad offers to be able to use the old iPad as small home servers like a Raspberry Pi and other tasks. To do th is, however, there is still time, because although they managed to get the kernel working, it is costing in particular to mount the file system
So far, they’ve managed to get iPads with A7 and A8 chips, like the iPad Air, iPad Air 2, and various iPad mini models, to be able to run this core. They achieved this through the Checkm8 exploit, which was discovered in 2019. With this, they hope that these iPads end up running postmarketOS
For now the project is in its initial stages and little more than curiosity, but, without a doubt, it is interesting. We must not lose sight of what we are talking about devices released 8 years ago, in 2013, which in technological terms is an eternity. For this reason, we can’t expect much from these machines, but, without a doubt, a much better idea than leaving them in a drawer.
