WhatsApp is widely used in Europe for group chatting with friends, family or complete strangers, but also for sharing multimedia content such as images and videos. Everyone has sent a photo on WhatsApp to a contact, and soon this function will be improved with the potential of AI.
And the WhatsApp application will receive a built-in image editor, which will allow us to edit photos before sending them to our contacts. The feature was discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta and is expected to reach all users in the near future.
This commitment to AI for editing photos is not surprising, as Meta, the owner of WhatsApp, has already implemented similar functions on Instagram and Facebook. Now these functions will arrive on WhatsApp along with other news.
WhatsApp photo editing
The novelty was discovered by LeSpAndroid, where they realized that WhatsApp had received the same AI functions as the rest of the Meta apps. More precisely, these are “Restyle” and “Backdrop”; A new function is added called “expand”.
From Restyle, this function is able to create an image from a sentence or “prompt”, just as it is possible to do with Dall-E and other generative AI; In this case, this function allows us to create new images from scratch that we can share directly through WhatsApp chats and groups.
On the other hand, the second function, Context, is capable of remove background from our photos; Not only that, but it is also capable of changing the background as we want. For example, we may ask you to place us in an office or on a beach, so that it appears that we are in those locations.
The new function that until now had not been seen in the rest of the Meta applications is Expand; and as its name suggests, it is capable of enlarge our image size using AI. This is achieved by generating more content on either side of the image, with the AI “imagining” what the space surrounding the original photograph would look like.
These three functions appear when we go to share an image through a WhatsApp chat, in the editor that the application already has and which allows us to crop or add text and “stickers” to the image. However, at the moment these functions do nothing even if these new buttons are clicked, so it seems that WhatsApp has not yet finished implementing everything necessary.
