The permanent closure of Google Stadia formalized almost a year ago does not seem to have broken the Google plans to enter the video game industry. And so, one way or another, we know that they are studying formulas to be present there. And the question of releasing video games on YouTube seems to be next.
They report in the Wall Street Journal how the video platform aims to be more than just a video platform. In the aforementioned support, they claim to have found references to test “Playables”, a new YouTube service that provides access to video games as an alternative to Google Play Pass and Netflix games.
“Simple” games for mobiles and computers
While Google Stadia was focused on being a cloud service that made it possible to enjoy AAA games without having to have very powerful hardware, what Google seems to want now is provide simple games for any user and, again, without losing sight of the idea of not needing a performing device.
In the Wall Street Journal, they claim to have had access to an internal email that YouTube sent to its employees and in which they invite them to testing a new service called “Playables” which includes access to mobile and desktop games. Th is practice is said to be common, since the platform often uses its own workers as guinea pigs to test new products, services or features.
Not too many details were specified beyond describe a game called “Stack Bounce”. It is said to be an arcade-style title in which the player must try to break different layers of bricks with a falling ball. If we look for it on Google Play, we find it since 2021, with more than 10,000 downloads and very low ratings, so we don’t know if it’s really the same title, although due to the mechanics , it seems so.
Little or nothing else is really known about it. From TWSJ, they emphasize the idea of boost casual style video games as one of the ideas that apparently they seem to have from Google. It is also not detailed whether this service, in the event of seeing the light one day, will be free or not.
From Google they did not want to advance more information, although they did not deny it either.
