The electric car market is about to change, with the arrival of a brand that in Europe is best known for its mobile phones: Xiaomi. In its native China, Xiaomi is more than just a brand, it’s a way of life; It is perfectly possible to live on their products alone, due to the large number of different devices they sell, and many Chinese citizens do just that.

From now on, the Xiaomi brand will also accompany them on the road, with the brand’s first car. Its own president announced it during the presentation of the Xiaomi 13 last year, and since then a “mystery car” has been seen driving on Chinese roads in recent months.

Development seems to have come to an end, after several months of testing on real roads, and everything indicates that the final presentation will take place at the end of December or the beginning of January. Xiaomi admitted that December 28 was one of the dates considered, but denied that reservations would begin on that day after the presentation conference, as rumored.

What already seems obvious is that there is not much left for the official presentation, and as proof, the latest leak which shows the process of preparing the official photographs that will be used in promoting the vehicle. Although several images have already been leaked, the new photos reveal details of the Max version, which will have additional technologies such as active aerodynamics and new wheel design.

The Xiaomi SU7 will be an electric sedan in the style of the Tesla Model S, although it is also rumored that there could be a taller “SUV” version with a different rear design. The car is the result of an investment of 10 billion yuan (1.284 million dollars), since unlike other brands, Xiaomi chose to create an original model instead of adopting one from a car manufacturer already established.

Consumers will also have two engine options, a 220 kW base model with rear-wheel drive, and a 495 kW model with all-wheel drive. There will also be several finishes, with models SU7, SU7 Max and SU7 Pro. Xiaomi has also invested heavily in batteries, and the SU7 will be available with two different packs:

  • 73.6 kWh, with 400 V charging, which will reach 669 km in CLTC cycle, manufactured by BYD and based on lithium-ferrophosphate (LFC) batteries.
  • 101 kWh, with 800 V charging, which will reach 800 km in CLTC cycle, manufactured by CATL and based on nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries.

The most powerful versions may have an active spoiler, which will remain hidden most of the time and will only increase when the speeds that require it are reached. The photos also revealed the existence of a camera in the door pillar, which could be used to open the car using facial recognition. The SU7 is expected to come with this kind of cutting-edge technology, including connectivity with Xiaomi phones that is expected to reach a higher level than Android Auto. The Xiaomi SU7 will be based on HyperOS, the new system introduced in the Xiaomi 14, so it will have access to advanced functions such as an application store and synchronization with the mobile phone.

The final straw for Tesla may have been the price. According to rumors, the Xiaomi SU7 could from 190,000 yuan, or around 24,400 dollars to change, and the higher version would cost 300,000 yuan, or around 38,000 dollars. If this is confirmed, it would be a big blow for Xiaomi, which could become the real rival of Tesla and other electric car manufacturers although it comes from a different sector.
