Get ready, because Artificial Intelligence is going to fill our screens, whether you like it or not. Early generative AI experiments demonstrate the technology’s great potential for creating text, images, and video, and it’s inevitable that it will be used in commercial productions.

Harrison Ford created with AI
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate”), the next episode of the saga with Harrison Ford, will be one of the first major Hollywood productions to use artificial intelligence in a large number of scenes; In concrete terms, this technology will be used by no less than in the first 25 minutes of the tape
The film will begin with a “flashback”, which will show a scene set in 1944about eight years later Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (“In Search of the Lost Ark”), the episode that started the saga. This scene will be important in establishing the story, which will then jump to 1969 and an elderly but determined Indiana Jones to solve the mystery and prevent the return of his enemies, the Nazis.
It’s not the first film to have such a flashback, of course; some movies tried it with makeup, others directly hired another actor to play the same character in those roles. But all of these solutions are too obvious, and Lucasfilm wants its big star to get as much screen time as possible.
The solution lies in using advanced algorithms to create a younger Harrison Ford, around 35 years old, which is the age the character would be during this scene. This was confirmed by Kathleen Kennedy herself, president of Lucasfilm, in an interview with Empire. The reason such a big board was tasked with making this announcement is that the subject is somewhat tricky in the creative sector, where AI is seen as little less than a horseman of the apocalypse that put millions of people out of work.
For this reason, Kennedy revealed that to achieve these very realistic results original images by Harrison Ford were used
Although Kennedy did not specify the technology used, it is most likely related to FRAN, a project presented by Disney (which owns Lucasfilm) last year. This AI is able to change the age of an actor with surprising results, as long as it’s based on images that show that person when they were young.
With all this, Lucasfilm hopes to please everyone, to show that creative positions are not in danger due to the use of AI, and above all to convince an audience who will be particularly critical if it does not work.
