When Donald Trump signed the order to add Huawei to the “blacklist”, he condemned the company to a secondary, if not tertiary, position in the smartphone market. Since then, all the new devices it has launched, such as the Huawei P50 Pro or the Huawei Nova 10, have the same weaknesses.

For starters, since Huawei cannot enter into commercial agreements with American companies, its mobiles they can’t carry Google apps by default; something it tried to solve with its own ecosystem.
The other problem is more serious: he does not have access to certain technologies and therefore has no choice but to stay on old versions for which he had already signed agreements. The 5G connectivity it’s one of those technologies, and because of it, all new Huawei models can use 4G to the fullest.

So how does this new Huawei with 5G fit into this story? The TD Tech P50 is, whichever way you look at it, the same Huawei P50 released last year; all specs are the same, including the 6.5-inch OLED display and 90Hz technology, Snapdragon 888 processor, and 4,100mAh battery with 66W fast charging.
A quick glance at the rear tells us that the cameras are also the same, easily identifiable in this signature Huawei-designed set; It continues to use a 50MP main sensor, accompanied by a 13MP wide-angle and 5x optical zoom telephoto lens.
But all is not the same. The main difference is the presence of 5G connectivity, which allows this mobile to take advantage of the new networks to obtain a higher connection speed. How did they get there? The key is in the name.
In fact, it’s not technically a “Huawei”, but a “TD Tech”. This brand specializes in telecommunications equipment for businesses and therefore its products are not aimed at the average consumer.
TD Tech entered into a licensing agreement with Huawei last year, allowing it to modify and resell its devices under its own brand. For all intents and purposes it’s still a Huawei, but it’s technically a TD Tech and therefore doesn’t suffer from the same limitations. In fact, 5G isn’t the only change TD Tech is implementing, and we’ve also seen new software on huawei layer; While there are no Google apps (this phone is sold in China, after all), there are apps designed for business and enterprise with a high degree of customization.
All this should make you realize that this mobile will never arrive in Europe, and even in China it would be rare to find it due to the very specific niche it caters to. But it remains a curiosity and a demonstration that there is nothing technical that prevents Huawei from adopting 5G.
