There is less time left before Windows 10 ends, even though it continues to be the most widely used computer operating system in the world. Microsoft refuses to back down on its plans and is already warning users that they must upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible if they do not want to encounter problems.
Once Windows 10 loses support next October 14you will no longer receive updates of any kind, both security and functionality. At least until then, Microsoft has committed to continuing to release updates that will protect the system as much as possible; although some of these updates will bring “freebies” that some users will not appreciate.
This is the case of the Windows 10 security update, which will bring the new Outlook application and will install it without the express authorization of the user; Installation of the update will be mandatory from February 11, although Outlook will also be present in the optional update which will be released on January 28. Traditionally, “security updates” focus on releasing patches and fixes for system “bugs” and flaws, and generally do not include new applications, which are considered new system features .
Microsoft has confirmed that it is not possible to block the installation of the new application, so it will take up space on our computer even if we don't want it. At least not all Windows 10 users would be affected; Microsoft reports that this information applies to users of Microsoft 365, the subscription service that offers, among other things, access to the Office office suite.
So, at least in theory, users who don't have Microsoft 365 shouldn't receive the new Outlook on their computer, and the good news is that the application can be uninstalled later that Microsoft force-installed it on us. Additionally, the classic Outlook app will not be uninstalled and settings will not be changed, so the user can continue as usual if they do not want to use the new app.
Still, this is a controversial decision, especially since the program Microsoft is trying to force-install isn't exactly popular. New perspectives received a lot of criticism from the first moment, being the replacement for the Windows 11 Mail application, a simple but very useful application; Windows 11 users have taken to Microsoft forums and Reddit to complain that the new Outlook app is heavier, lacks basic features and displays ads.
However, Microsoft prefers users to use the new Outlook app because it is based on the same interface and code as the web app, and because it offers access to Copilot, the AI assistant that has become the big bet from Microsoft. This is probably why the new Outlook app will now also arrive on Windows 10 computers, although to get there you will have to use a mandatory update.
