The New York Times reports on a viral problem with Apple's vocal dictation function, where some users have discovered that saying that the word “racist” means that dictation is tapping in the “trump”, which then corrects itself “racist” word after a moment.
A tiktok video showing the phenomenon a week, but others have shared similar stories. The New York Times says it has been able to reproduce the problem several times; igamesnews's publishers could not.
Apple told NYT that the problem was caused by “phonetic overlap between the two words”, and said that Apple worked on a fix. It seems somewhat incredulous, because the two words do not seem very similar phonetically and there are certainly other words, this could change more similar. This does not explain why it changes.
According to John Burkey, an AI developer who was part of the Apple Siri team and who is still in contact with old colleagues, the problem started with an update of Apple's IA servers. He says that the fact that the word is automatically compared gives the impression that these are not bad training data, it is deliberate code. He thinks it looks like a very serious farce, something deliberately slipped into the data or the code.
