Foxconn has formalized an agreement for the mass production of microLED displays. The iPhone, Apple Watch and other products could have it very soon

MicroLED is the next big screen revolution for Apple devices

Those from Cupertino are about to complete the transition of its iPhones to OLED panels with the iPhone SE 4 which will be presented in spring 2024. Although this may not be as important an achievement as the one they are about to undertake. Foxconn announced a partnership with the company Porotech to bring microLED panels to future augmented reality glasses and other devices. Apple could bring microLED to its devices, notably with the iPhone and Apple Watch.

MicroLED is Apple's next bet as a screen for its devices

Those from Cupertino started using LCD panels for their products with a simple backlight. Later, these panels were powered by miniLED backlighting and gradually included OLED. The latest example of products with OLED is the iPad Pro presented in May.

The current plan is to soon bring OLED to other devices such as MacBooks and other iPad lines.. As we mentioned earlier, the iPhone SE is the latest iPhone to migrate to OLED. NOW, Those from Cupertino consider microLED as the next important evolution of their products. Users would have Brighter screens, more accurate colors, durability and better energy efficiency. The most representative advantage of OLED is that the microLED screen does not have a “burn-in” effect.

Mass production of microLEDs by Foxconn will begin in late 2025

The release states that this collaboration “aims to meet demands for the production of microscreen chips and augmented reality glasses.” “High performance, high brightness, compact and lightweight” screens are expected with the aim of concretely advancing the “global development” of both technology dedicated to augmented reality glasses and micro-screens.

Production expected to start en masse in the last quarter of 2025. The first products that we could see with this type of panel would be developed from 2026, having a sufficient number of panels for their implementation. Unfortunately, no further details are given on which brands will receive it first, only that it will “satisfy the needs of future global mainstream customers.”

Apple is its main customer and we have no doubt that priority can be given to Cupertino for the installation of these panels. In addition to the iPhone, a pending product that was previously known to include such a panel is the Apple Watch. We can now say that the cancellation or postponement of the project was because the technology was not ready to be developed.. Another product that could have it in time, depending on launch plans, would be the Apple Vision Pro.

As we saw with OLED, Apple will have to decide over the next year which path to define in terms of which products will implement it first and later as part of its own transition cycle.
