Folding mobiles have not yet reached the level necessary to conquer the market. It’s not just that they are relatively expensive, it’s that manufacturers are still not able to explore all the possibilities of this technology. So basically we have two types of foldables, and they both copy Samsung: those that look like the Galaxy Z Flip and those that look like the Galaxy Z Fold.
Samsung’s new triple folding
So it’s fortunate that Samsung is already working on a third kind of foldable phone, one that will fold in two points instead of just one, creating three parts instead of two halves like now.
Samsung has been patenting designs like this for years, but it’s only now that the project seems to be picking up steam; as revealed by Korean media The guru, confirmed by Patently Apple, Samsung has patented a new design in the United States that would be the last for a new three-piece foldable mobile that will soon be launched. Although it is not known exactly when, some rumors pointed to this same 2023, although others speak of 2024.
Samsung’s new foldable would become three different devices
The big advantage of folding the screen at two different points is that the device can be transform into different versions according to our needs. When completely closed, the screen is the size of a regular mobile, and the interface is also that of a normal Samsung mobile. Open one fold, and you’ve got a bigger screen, and open the second fold, and you’ve basically got a tablet.
In addition to the basic design, the patent also mentions that the interface will adapt automatically at every screen size, providing more space for apps based on what’s available; there will be no interface for mobile and another for tablet, it will be the same one that will change in real time. The patent explains how the built-in sensors will be able to detect exactly how open the screen is, in order to change the graphics accordingly.
It also assumes that no need to buy a separate tabletbut this device will be a “three in one”, becoming a complete tablet that will probably be compatible with a stylus like the current Galaxy Z Fold.
A device like this could completely end an entire industry, that of tablets. Why buy a separate device if you can just open your phone to get one that does the same thing? It will be then that we will truly know the true potential of flexible displays.
