Have you ever wondered how many apps are in the Google Play Store, how many are free, and what is the average price of paid apps? It may or may not, but what we are going to show you next surely seems curious to you.
And that’s it, it’s always good to stop and think for a moment how huge the platforms we use are and there are few stores bigger than the play store. That being said, let’s go with a healthy dose of numbers.
There are only 3% paid applications and 2,126 applications are launched per day
The first thing to say is that the statistics that we are going to see below belong to the 42matters group, a company that is in charge of offering data to different companies (such as Meta, Ookla or Comcast) and that, without the need for renting anything, can satisfy our curiosity.
And it is that, according to this company, There are 3,791,504 apps on Google Play. They are a real barbarity and, according to data from the same company, the App Store has “only” 1,757,489 apps, two million less. Going back to the Play Store, these more than three and a half million applications belong to 1,158,304 publishers.
The figure is dizzying, but even more so if we reduce the space-time. And that’s it, 83,106 apps were launched last month, 10,931 were launched last week and the average is 2.126 million applications launched every day. This, given that I actually use about 10 apps all the time, seems like complete nonsense to me.
And this large number of applications, to which category do they belong? From the graph below, we can see that the “educational” take the cake, far surpassing the commercial, tools and entertainment. There are 189,000 (again, mind-blowing) music apps.
Of all, 96.97% -3,672,380 apps- are free, while only 3.03% -114,656- are paid. Of course, the free ones can have micropayments and be included in the “free apps” category. Of the paid apps, most cost between three dollars and less than a dollar, with a very small percentage of apps exceeding five dollars.
Now a very, very interesting fact is the average Google Play app rating. And it is that, according to these data, nearly half of apps don’t have a rating (48.82% of them, to be exact, or 1,851,018 applications).
Having no rating indicates that this app is not really reaching the audience and that might be because it got lost in the ocean of apps in the Play Store. Something similar to what happens with many games on Steam. AND of those with a rating, most have four and a half stars.
And what about Europe?
If we examine this same database, but focused on Europe, we find that there are more than 6,300 Spanish publishers And although the data is somewhat outdated, there are over 26,600 apps created by these publishers. The apps with the most downloads should surprise no one and they are the following:
- Cl@ve PIN
- wallapop
- milanoncios
- Idealistic
- Imagine
- RTVE Play
- Burger King
- Tax Agency
- Globe
- photo house
In addition, the average rating of these more than 26,600 Spanish applications is 3.53 out of five stars. That’s just below the overall store average of 3.74 stars.
