Accessory makers go where they go, and I think that’s perfectly mirrored by what’s happening in the Apple Watch Ultra accessory market. Never mind that Apple insisted on the strength and durability of the watch: covers have already started to be sold to protect it.
The Apple Watch Ultra is an aerospace-grade titanium device, designed to withstand shocks and bad weather in inhospitable places: tens of meters under the sea, deserts, mountainous areas at high altitudes… some shared tests on YouTube show you can hammer the Apple Watch Ultra and the table will break before the clock.
With a watch like this, proof against almost anything, does it make sense to protect its titanium case and sapphire panel with a case? For manufacturers, yes. At Amazon you can find them in tempered glass for 12.99 dollars or even packs of two shells for 10.99 dollars (although these only protect the case).
Protecting a sapphire crystal with tempered glass or a layer of titanium with polyurethane seems absurd. I can think of people who want to protect the watch not from breakage but from scratches, but again: we are talking about sapphire and titanium. It is extremely difficult to leave marks on these materials.
But we already know what is said: the customer is always right. If these blankets are sold, that means there’s a demand, and if there’s a demand, manufacturers have a logical, free way to source their supplies. We will see if this market for “protectors” for the Apple Watch Ultra ends up triumphing.
