The handheld console market exploded in popularity last year, driven primarily by two types of devices. On the one hand, consoles based on computer components, such as the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally, show that it is now possible to play the latest releases anywhere.
The other major market trend concerns Android consoles, cheaper, but with a lot of potential thanks to the use of more efficient processors suitable for portable use. And that’s where the new console from Ayaneo comes in, a company that has made a name for itself in the “retro” market with launches like the Ayaneo Retro Mini PC or the Ayaneo Next Lite.
The Pocket S, as its name suggests, is a portable console with a smaller format than usual; With a “only” six-inch screen and a thin, light chassis, this is a smaller console than usual, but without sacrifices in terms of controls or hardware. They even took the liberty of introducing an innovative vibration with three modes to offer an experience that portable consoles normally don’t have.

This reduced size was possible thanks to the fact that the Ayaneo Pocket S is based on a mobile processor, and not a laptop model; But, far from simply taking the chip from a smartphone and putting it in the console, Ayaneo has opted for one of the best options available to manufacturers today: the new Snapdragon G3x Gen 2.
Introduced last year, the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 is Qualcomm’s most powerful option for the gaming sector, with eight cores capable of reaching 3.36 GHz
Ayaneo claims it’s enough power to run modern and classic games using emulation; and the first tests carried out by YouTubers confirm this, with very high frame rates for running games, both from classic consoles and more modern consoles like the PSP or the PlayStation 2 and the GameCube. In video, games seem to display very well on the 1440p resolution IPS screen, more than sufficient for this 6-inch size.
This is something that, until not so long ago, was only possible on high-end mobile phones, demonstrating the level that mobile processors have reached. This is not the only reason, and the Dragon Tamer cooling system created by Ayaneo also has a responsibility, keeping the processor at the right temperature and thus avoiding the frequency drops that we still see in some leading cell phones.
The console will also have a dedicated button to switch between different power modes, depending on the amount of power and battery desired. The price is the big unknown of the Ayaneo Pocket S, since the Indiegogo campaign has not yet started.
