WhatsApp’s privacy is (hopefully) getting better with encryption of your data and security options that we release over time. Now, there can always be a loophole like the one we are going to tell you about and with which you can (I emphasize the word “can”) obtain information that interests you without other contacts noticing.
The trick lies in the so-called WhatsApp broadcast groups, a feature that has been present on our iPhones for a long time and which will probably soon be replaced by the channels of the service. Through them, WhatsApp can suggest who has added you to its contact list and who hasn’t
WhatsApp mailing lists hide this little indicator
Trying to take advantage of this trick is easy. You need to open WhatsApp and tap on the “Mailing Lists” link that you have on the chat list:
On the screen that appears, click on ‘New list’:
WhatsApp will ask you to add recipients to the broadcast list you create. Add the contact you want to know if you’ve been added to their contact list and any other contact you know has saved you, such as a friend or family member. All you have to do is mark it in the list that appears:
WhatsApp will show you the empty broadcast list. Send any message (list members will receive it as a personal message). If after some time you hold your finger on this message and click on “Info”, you will see information indicating whether the contacts have received or read your message:
If you see a contact in the “Read by” section with the check in blue, it is likely that this contact has added you to their calendar. If you see that the contact is in the “Delivered to” section, then it is possible that this contact does not have you in his calendar
I’ll reiterate what I said at the start: WhatsApp’s privacy measures mean this trick isn’t foolproof. That a contact appears in the “Delivered to” section don’t guarantee that I didn’t save you, because it is possible that this contact has set their WhatsApp settings so that no one can know if they have read the message or not. In any case, it can be an interesting indicator.
