The Samsung Galaxy S23 was updated a few days ago to improve photography and include the new 2x portrait mode, but not only does it use that great quality, its camera is capable of record with a stabilization that leaves the competition still far quality of experience on your brand new Android phone.
Ridley Scott, director who has to his credit legendary films such as blade runner oh Gladiator, recorded a short film for Samsung to demonstrate the great experience it offers in video recording. EL ESPAÑOL – Android Libre had the opportunity to test this capability in situ in Terceira, Azores, at a time when other mobile phones would struggle to stabilize a recording of sufficient quality to even show hard-to-take scenes.
In a boat to one of the small islands surrounding Terceira in the Azoresthe recording made with the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera recorded this ability to maintain, as far as possible, stabilization to reflect such a complicated moment as going to “jump” between wave and wave with the shocks and sudden movements that were occurring.
As can be seen in the video shared from these lines, the recording reaches almost professional quality so that it reflects at all times the sudden movements that occurred, but with the almost magical quality of the Galaxy S23 Ultra to leave a recording of a few minutes in which it almost seems that the experience is captured with a professional video camera.
And it is that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is able to excel in the experience of its photography and video recording. But it doesn’t even come close to the radiant quality of video recording which, with its stabilization, is capable of any user has the possibility to register certain planes which could perfectly fit on a professional grade tape.
It should be specified that the shocks of the waves —as can be seen at the end of the recorded video— They caused rapid ups and downs that the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera was able to reduce amazingly. Even with forced and unexpected movements, stability is maintained to leave a perfect shot that generates a lot of curiosity to use this experience in other environments and circumstances. Of course, recording at 60 FPS also helps produce a very real natural recording that enables certain capabilities that could not have been imagined years ago from an Android mobile. This is precisely where Samsung is emphasizing to stand out from the competition and make this mobile the best of the year 2023.
Your camera system
The stabilization shown is just crazy with an epic experience that can lead any user this summer to make video recordings that will receive many I like in social networks and chat applications.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra mounts a Quad rear camera system consisting of a 200MP main camera with f/1.7 aperture, 0.6 pixel sizeμm and an 85˚ field of view; a 12MP ultra-wide-angle AF with f/2.2 aperture, 1.4 pixel sizeμm and a field of view of 120˚; a 10 Mpx telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, f/4.9 aperture, 1.12 pixel sizeμm and 11˚ field of view; and another 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, f/2.4 aperture, 1.12 pixel sizeμm and 36˚ field of view. Video recording is one of the most attractive features and, as Ridley Scott comments —with its great capacity for stabilization and the compactness of its format— Being a small smartphone compared to a professional video camera, it allows you to make recordings that might otherwise be very complicated.
For focusing, it has two important components: optical image stabilization (OIS) and Laser AF (laser focus). The latter is only available on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, unlike the other two models in the series that lack this component. This is a system that uses a small laser transmitter and receiver for autofocus by sending a laser beam at the subject to be photographed and bouncing back to hit the receiver. Different mathematical algorithms come into play to calculate the time taken by lightning and thus participate in this stabilization of the video recording. Finally, the The VDIS system is used digitally for video stabilization that totally influences the recordings made.
The ace resolutions at which it records are: 8K 30 FPS (7680 x 4320), 4K UHD 60 FPS (3840 x 2160), 1080p FHD 60 FPS (1920 x 1080), 720p HD 30 FPS (1280 x 720) and 4K HDR10+ 60 FPS (3840 x 2160). It also offers different shooting speed options: ‘Super Steady’ mode at QHD at 60 FPS, Super slow motion at 1080p at 960 FPS, 4K portrait video at 30 FPS, slow motion at 1080p at 240 FPS, 4K hyperlapse video at 30 FPS and director’s view at 1080p at 30 FPS.
stabilization in photos
In fact, if digital zoom is used with the 10x telephoto lens, when magnifying the subject or scene to be photographed, in the camera app viewfinder you can see what happens when you hold the phone still to focus and a the viewer thumbnail turns yellow to alert the user that this is the perfect time to capture the photo when setting the frame. That said, if the phone moves a bit at this point, you can see how the camera app has almost fixed the subject, achieving that magical stabilization of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Precisely in Terceira, in the Azores, we were able to verify in situ how the 10x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom from this same camera they offer excellent results thanks to the image stabilization pointed out in the previous paragraph and which counts a lot to obtain excellent captures at a distance well away from the subject. Some screenshots show digital zoom capability and image stabilization. Of course, in this experiment a tripod was used due to the wind that was blowing in the area we were in and thus lessening the effect.
In the camera app settings, some are related to video recording: automatic FPS enabled by default, video stabilization and advanced video options. The latter provides access to high-performance videos (to favor quality), HDR10+ videos to optimize colorsTouch Contrast, Audio Zoom to match the audio zoom to that of the camera, and 360 Audio Recording, which uses Bluetooth headphones for this type of immersive capture.
There is another very interesting option in the camera settings, in the General section, to use tracking AF. what he does is always keep the camera focused on the subject, even if it moves. From the camera app, you can also activate super steady mode for recordings in which sudden movements occur one after another. In fact, this method is not even used in split recording to make it clear that recording as is from Galaxy S23 Ultra is wonderful and further enhances its great video stabilization.
You also have access to Galaxy S23 Ultra professional video mode with all kinds of options for advanced customization. All the settings are manual to be able to touch the ISO, the shooting speed, the EV, the focus, the white balance or the microphone. Wide and zoom modes are also available, as is a soundbar that shows what’s being recorded, either on the left (L) or right (R) channel. Another interesting aspect of this mode is the ability to modify contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation and hue. Of course, you can also switch between the different resolutions.
The only one who under this mode, not all cameras can be used and there is only the option to focus at 0.6x or 1x. The same happens with resolutions when the option to use UHD (ultra high definition) disappears, deteriorating the quality of the recorded video, although the QHD and FHD options are more than adequate for normal circumstances as long as it’s not night or there’s little light in the scene.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has the large capacity of adapt to the needs of the normal user and the professional who are looking for more advanced settings to get the most out of their cameras; either just grab the camera app, turn on video mode and start recording, or switch to pro mode to apply customizations. Its ability to stabilize video recording allows for simply epic results for recording family moments, vacations, or any other moment you want to leave behind for posterity.
