A video of Jobs giving a speech at the 1983 International Design Conference shows how clearly he saw the future of technology.
In the world of technology, Steve Jobs will always be considered a visionary. Since the creation of Apple, it has been proven that his ideas were always one step ahead of trends, but he was also able to “predict the future” and there is also evidence. This week, Former Apple design chief and one of Jobs’ great friends Jony Ive shared a video in which Jobs plans something unthinkable at the time.
In the video shared by Ive, Steve Jobs is seen giving a speech at the 1983 International Design Conference, the year before the Macintosh was introduced. Much of the 55-minute duration, Apple founder insists personal computer sales will one day surpass those of cars
Steve Jobs’ revolution in 1983
Jony Ive added the video in question to the Steve Jobs archives this week. The post was accompanied by a description in which the famous designer offers a bit of context on the content of the the conference held in Aspen and themed “The Future Is Not What It Used to Be” and also some conclusions that he preferred to reserve for the time.
In his talk, Steve predicts that by 1986, computer sales will surpass those of automobiles and that within the next ten years, people will spend more time with computers than with cars. These are absurd claims for the early 1980s. Describing what he sees as the inevitability of becoming a new consumer category, he asks the designers in the audience for help. Ask them to start thinking about the design of these products, because whether well designed or poorly designed, they will continue to be made. […]
Jobs, who has always distinguished himself as an entertaining and compelling speaker, addressed a topic that, as was demonstrated today, was “crucial in defining products that would change our culture and our lives forever.”
Ive, who always had words of gratitude and admiration for Jobs, also added in his description:
It was a victory of beauty, purity and, as he said, care for everything. I sincerely believed that by doing something useful, stimulating and beautiful, we were expressing our love for humanity.
Today, Apple is one of those companies that sells more computers than cars and is also one of those that does it best. Thanks to this and all the devices that have confirmed the dominance of technology, in 2024 it has once again held the title of the most valuable company in the world.
