It’s not the first Twitter clone and it won’t be the last either, but Instagram’s Threads has enough votes to be the one giving Elon Musk the most headaches. Threads is already there and we tested the application thoroughly.
Threads has been launched in practically all over the world except Europe, although there is nothing stopping you from downloading the APK and installing it on an Android mobile. That’s exactly what we did and we tell you what Threads looks like and what you can do in this latest Twitter clone.
Registration and first steps
The first thing you find upon opening Threads is the track record and ingenuity of Zuckerberg, who chose to completely recycle the Instagram account. There is no waiting list or invitati ons, anyone with Instagram can go to Threads
This is so because Threads can import our instagram profile. A profile that, for now, is made up of our name (which we can’t change here, but on Instagram), a biography and a link. Even if you import the data from Instagram, you can edit it by hand in the case of bio and link. The next step is to choose the visibility of your profile, i.e. whether it will be public or private, like on Instagram.
Finally it’s time to follow people to start, although there is a trick: Threads allows us follow potential friends on Instagram who will or will not join Threads, thus making the social network appear less empty than any other social network that has just started. Starting from scratch is not the same as having some 1,300 million potential users to interact with. You can manually choose who to follow or tap follow everyone and let it be what God wants.

In Threads everything is thread and so it is not surprising that the application allows you to easily create discussion threads every time you start a new message (called threads, by the way). The compose button is nicely centered in the app and after tapping it you can write whatever you want, up to 500 characters per message.
In each thread you can attach a photo or video from your gallery, regardless of how many characters you have already entered. There is no support for animated GIFs or stickers and at this time it does not allow us to attach them from Gboard and such. Maybe it will come later, or not.
As we mentioned, Threads focuses on threadsso each time we start a block of text, we will have the next one ready to add a second thread, ad infinitum.
interactions
Interactions with Threads threads are threads in themselves, because we don’t have differences as happens, for example, with Instagram posts and their comments. When we reply to a thread, our response is governed by the same rules 500 characters maximum and without the possibility of using animated GIFs.
In each thread we can indicate that we like it with the heart icon, reply to it or repost it, which is how the app calls retweets. Reissues can be by appointment or if it.
We also have the option to forward this thread to other apps with the share button. Here we see the option of share as instagram story
notifications
Threads keeps us updated on what’s going on in our account from the core tab. Threaded notifications are conveniently categorized into four categories: all, replies, mentions and verified.
Each type also has its own icon with a different color that helps us distinguish them easily. Additionally, we will also receive notifications from Threads on Instagramso we will discover some news while using the other application of the house.
User Profile
As we mentioned before, our Threads profile is modeled after the one we have on Instagram, although we are free to customize it a bit. We barely see photo, name, biography and link, in addition to the latest threads and replies that have been posted.
Our profile has two shortcuts at your fingertips: on the right we have the link to our Instagram account and on the left a direct access to configure our privacy. It is also from here that we can enter the settings.
Settings
Threads settings are still a bit sparse, with a few sections. The most numerous adjustments are those of private life
in options account there is a curious option for take a break every 10, 20 or 30 minutesas well as a temporary deactivation until you decide to reactivate it.
Our opinion
While other alternatives such as BlueSky opted for invitations and the hype that usually comes with them, Zuckerberg opted to open the doors “wide” to achieve maximum impact at launchand it seems to be working: two million people signed up within two hours of its launch.
It’s not just who are, but who will happen. Threads realizes avoid the feeling of deserted countryside that the vast majority of social networks have when they are launched, having as potential users the 1,300 million Instagram users who can already be followed, even if they do not yet have an account. That’s what Google tried to do with Google+, only better.
As for the app itself, the operation is correct and the initial launch has enough to give a lot of play and users start picking it up and publishing it. The hype doesn’t come from having exclusive access, but because your friends are already using it and also – if you already use Instagram – it costs you between zero and nothing to create an account to start using it .
In Threads we saw a Meta’s main strategic move that it has taken advantage of its app ecosystem and waited just long enough to launch a product that can make it very difficult for Twitter. Now we just need to see what Twitter will do to fight back.
