What has been given is finished. As usual, Samsung has quietly announced that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are missing software support, which means they will no longer receive updates. They won’t even have security patches as usual on a quarterly basis.
And we say “quietly” because the company didn’t issue any statement or press release as such, but removed it from its support website which lists the devices it continues to update. So far, these devices were on the quarterly update list with security fixes.
And now what?
What were two of the best phones of 2018 say goodbye after several years of not receiving full system updates. they came to receive Android 10 with A 2.5 user interfacebut they remained there in terms of visual or functional novelties, the most recent devices being those which continued to implement these complete versions.
However, you shouldn’t worry if you own one of these devices. As with any other, this fact of becoming “obsolete” at the software level only means that they will not receive security patches. Well, that’s not a trivial matter either, but in no way will it prevent you from continuing to use the device as normal.
If it is true that in the future there will be many apps that stop supporting. However, this happens after many years and these Galaxy S9s are still too new. See for example that WhatsApp offers an average support of 10 years for mobiles, Android and iPhone. Therefore, it shouldn’t be something to worry about in the short term.
Samsung, like others, is stepping up and already offering more years of software support on its latest devices.
It should be noted that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, launched the same year as the aforementioned S9, yes, you will continue to receive support on a quarterly basis. However, it may soon be dropped from the list, as happened with these, as they were launched almost six months later and, therefore, their longevity is further extended.
So far, Apple is the company that offers the most update support for mobiles, but fortunately the trend is changing for the Android domain and more and more companies are adding to offer more years of support. Samsung itself has confirmed that the Galaxy S22 will receive at least 4 years of updates complete and up to 5 security patches.
