Romeo doesn't have Juliet, but he does have a landlady who is preoccupied with his escapades in the neighborhood yard. This is the name of Enrique's cat, a friend of this editorial staff who told us how an AirTag gave him the biggest scare of his life and he eventually discovered that, despite his successes in many cases, he did not live up to his own.
Your kitten is very independent. So much so that every morning he allows her to go out onto the common patio of his subdivision to frolic. He always comes back on time to eat mid-morning, even though there was one day when he didn't.. Taking advantage of the fact that he had the AirTag on his collar, Enrique tried to find out his location. And it was far away. Very far away.
The always punctual Romeo did not show up for his appointment
Only once did Romeo not sleep at home. At least that's what Enrique tells us. It was a few years ago when, in search of his Julieta (a cat in heat whose real name we don't know), he decided to stay up late in an inhospitable place in the neighborhood. Due to this and possible illness, he decided to castrate him and “he was never away from home for more than two to three hours.”
Enrique has a communal patio in his subdivision with high walls and roofs where Romeo likes to be, whether he's sunbathing or trying to reach a bird with his little legs. Last October, like every morning, he opened the door for him around 9 a.m. so he could take his walk. At noon, the approximate time of his usual return, Enrique had prepared a small can of food for him.
“Sometimes it's surprising how punctual Romeo is, it's like he has a watch,” Enrique tells us, saying that when 12:15 struck and Romeo didn't show up, he started to become odd. He went out into the yard and looked in all the usual places where the little one rested, but he didn't see him. “It was raining a bit, so I thought maybe he was sheltering on a roof.”
After also inspecting under these roofs, Enrique remembered something which, in this situation, serves to restore calm and which in his case made me panic. He remembered that Romeo had an AirTag on his collar, opened the “Search” app on his iPhone and saw where he was.
“I thought they were going to do witchcraft with my cat”
“I didn’t understand anything,” said Enrique, remembering how In the “Search” application, it appeared that Romeo was in the neighboring neighborhood.. “About 10 kilometers or so.” It's not that it was impossible that the cat could have walked so much in just over two hours, but it was strange knowing his behavior.
Enrique admits that his first thought was that Romeo had been stolen. This is not a purebred cat, but a mixed breed. However, it was dark and As Halloween approaches, there are those who use them for rituals in which they end up sacrificing them. This is also the reason why black cats are not allowed to be adopted on these dates. And precisely this story happened in the weeks leading up to this day.
It was obviously an assumption that, while somewhat paranoid, he admitted, made more sense than thinking he had escaped. It wasn't usual for him to leave beyond this usual hour, let alone go that far away.
“And when I started the car…”
Whether it was a kidnapping or not, Enrique planned to pick up Romeo at the address that the AirTag still indicated, even if the location had not been updated for several minutes. He had parked the car in front of the house and, as soon as he started, there was “a divine apparition” which was none other than Romeo.
The mischievous Romeo had to leave the inner courtyard towards the street and, whether through distraction or simply disorientation, he had not arrived in time. The fact is that as soon as he saw him, he turned off the car engine and quickly drove off towards Romeo. He recognized it instantly and, “as curt as it was,” he didn’t even react in a particularly affectionate way. Enrique did it, who “ate him with kisses” after the scare he had given him.
Of course, there was one important detail that Enrique wouldn't realize until a little later at that point. The cat came without a collar and therefore without AirTag. And anything we can say about what happened on Romeop's morning walk and losing the AirTag collar is nothing more than conjecture.
Enrique suspects someone stole the necklace and AirTag. His theory is based on the fact that Romeo never leaves this patio (or on rare occasions). His neighbors know him and he puts his hand on fire for his innocence, but not because of a random passerby who came across the feline and observed that he was wearing the AirTag. He supports his theory that although he is not “the most affectionate cat in the world”, Romeo “is quite friendly” and that any stranger could have approached and stolen him.
Unfortunately, Romeo doesn't know how to speak to explain it and ultimately it doesn't matter much anymore. However, this leaves us with several lessons. The first is that It won't help the thief to have stolen an AirTagsince Enrique blocked its use when he finally found his cat. On the other hand, Enrique himself learned that in the end these accessories are not foolproof and in fact Apple does not recommend using AirTag on pets.
