The government has a new strategy to try restrict adult content to minors: Use the My Digital Wallet app as an age verification method before you can access pornographic sites.
Although the app is still in the testing phase, the government has already announced how the new identity verification system that It will be necessary to be able to view adult content on the Internet. Basically and in summary, the application will be able to generate a kind of virtual card usable for the next 30 days.
“Click here if you are over 18” is not enough. This is the government’s new plan to stop minors from watching porn
Until now, when accessing a page with adult content, the same site offers us a method of age verification that is not very effective: by simply clicking on the button that says “click if you are over 18”, you can ignore this warning. And the consumption of porn by minors is a growing problem, according to the authorities: 7 out of 10 teenagers regularly consume pornography
The government’s new measure aims to have people use their mobile phones to verify their age, through the My Digital Wallet application. Using this application to verify age when accessing sites with adult content will protect the user’s privacy, as The entire verification process is done directly on the device.
The tool will work like this: after downloading the My Digital Wallet app, users must configure it with their electronic ID to verify their identity, which will be associated with the app and that device. As you are of legal age, you can request the credentials to verify your age when accessing adult content pages. Each credential has a 30-day expiration and each can be used a maximum of 10 times with the same provider. When the credentials are exhausted, you can request more from the app.
Pages with pornographic and adult content must display a QR code that the user must scan with the application from your mobile, thus using one of the identifiers. In other words, this system allows us to verify our age in the application to obtain “tokens”, and to use these tokens (which are not associated with a specific person) when accessing pornographic pages. In this way, the government is committed to preserving the privacy of users.
Of course, this raises many questions and concerns. The most important one concerns the confidentialitysome believe that this system could become a surveillance system. On the other hand, it is also true that this type of measures can be circumvented, for example through the use of VPNs, in addition to the fact that adult content pages hosted abroad must implement the QR code system, which represents another challenge. for the government’s plan.
Minister José Luis Escriva recognizes the difficulties that this strategy faces and that This is not a foolproof method. to prevent children and adolescents from accessing restricted content: “We will hear that this is not enough and that is true. In other words, more needs to be done, we may hear that there may even be ways around this solution. Despite this, “we believe that this is probably the most necessary and effective measure at the moment,” the minister said.
