One of the biggest new things Apple introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro models was the Always-On Display. Functionality that already existed for (quite) a long time in other devices, mainly Android. Like always, Apple revisited it and didn’t launch an always-on display like we used to, but the entire screen has been darkened and the refresh rate has been lowered to 1Hz, completely changing the experience that existed in the Android AoD. But how much battery would that use?
Since the launch, many users have wondered if it would be worth enabling this feature due to the possible battery drain it would cause.
The iPhone 14 Pro would have only one 0.2% difference in battery consumption per hour between black screen mode or Apple mode (all screen visible and black), which means nothing. Also, compared to fully off mode, these modes consume 0.8% and 0.6% battery per hour respectively. That is to say, less than 1% per hour
In order to make the decision whether or not to activate the feature, We must also consider that the screen will still turn off on many other occasions, therefore Always-On mode will not always be enabled. Putting it in your pocket, turning it over, focus modes, battery saving mode and many more will make the iPhone “power off” so always-on display will not consume battery.
Personally, I recommend activating this mode and enjoying 100% of the features that our iPhone 14 Pro offers us. Just saving a little battery life is not worth it (except on special days like when you’re away from home or traveling) to lose all the potential of our iPhone and leave out new features.
