Two weeks of vacation with a folding mobile

I have just over two months left to complete my experience of continuous folding mobile testing. For the past few weeks I’ve been offline and haven’t posted because I had a vacation. But it gave me the perfect excuse to use the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 in its perfect usage scenario, outdoors and on the go.

This smartphone folds for easy transport, and I tell you, it shows.

The convenience of compacting the mobile

This summer I have been to three regions, all located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, and all with very high temperatures. This means that I have been wearing shorts, swimsuits and shorts for a long time. Using a mobile that occupies as little as the folded Flip 4 has been a success.

Even to go to the beach, I took it in the pocket of my pants, and when I put it away, it fits in any small pocket of beach bags.

A battery that improves, but is fair

Foldables are not mobiles that boast of having good batteries and I noticed that. Being concrete, I had two interesting experiences.

On a 24 hour trip to Gibraltar I left with a cell phone at 100% and arrived home 12 hours later with a 15% battery after taking many photos, videos, a few calls and a bit of navigation.

The cell phone complied, but I felt like if I wanted to play something for half an hour, the battery would be dead before I got home.

The other experience was in Portugal, a trip of about 12 hours again. In this case, I left home with 75% and arrived back with 2%. Yes, I could have charged it to the maximum, but I was using it shortly before leaving and the charging speed of this mobile is not particularly fast.

This is what I blame him for the most, beyond autonomy. Samsung has a big disadvantage here with its rivals, which isn’t critical in my day-to-day life, but it could be in yours.

And the telephoto lens?

As I say in the video analysis I made to this mobile, the absence of a telephoto lens with optical zoom is passable in a 500 euro mobile, but not in the 1000 euro one.

I’ve taken hundreds of photos on vacation and often wish I had the zoom of the Samsung Galaxy S22. I don’t even aspire to have what the S22 Ultra has, but not having a telephoto lens limits the zoom to 2x because it’s digital, because beyond that the poorer quality is noticeable.

In summary, foldables are already useful everyday mobiles, but they still need to come down in price for their adoption to be massive. I don’t expect there to be models with this technology for 500 dollars in two years, but I hope to start seeing models for around 800 and, little by little, get closer to those 500 that cost good mid-range mobiles.
