Google is betting more and more on hardware, especially as it sees how Apple is nibbling ground in sectors where its partners (Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.) cannot stop it. Additionally, Google is making progress in other markets where Apple doesn’t have a presence, such as routers. A few weeks ago, she presented the new Nest Wifi Pro, a high-end router that we were able to test for a week.
a design you like
Whether a tech device looks good or not is usually something relevant in their day-to-day lives, but there are exceptions. If we have an ugly router, it is more likely that we will tend to hide it behind the TV, under a shelf, etc.
This affects the quality of the Wi-Fi signal, which is why the Nest Wifi Pro looks good, it’s not just about the design.
This device is small, smaller than it looks in photos and videos, and has a glossy finish that attracts dust and fingerprints, although admittedly we won’t be touching it much. , it’s not a phone.
On the back we only have the port for the socket to the electrical network, the Ethernet port to connect it to the modem and the port to add a peripheral.
Security, comfort, management from the mobile…
One of the most useful things about Google routers is how many advanced features we have.
You can create a guest network, control the devices that connect to the Wi-Fi network, give priority to each other, measure speed without apps or third-party sites…
All this is controlled from the Google Home app, although to configure it we will have to eliminate previous Google routers if we had any. In my case it was like that and I had to delete this configuration before to be able to analyze this device. One of its drawbacks is that it is not compatible with older models, which use older Wi-Fi technologies.
Looking to the future, we can be calm. This router not only has Wifi 6E technology, but is also compatible with Thread, and in a few months it will be with Matter via a software update.
Coverage and range
But all of the above is meaningless if the quality of our Wi-Fi network does not improve. After all, that’s why we’re considering buying a device like this Nest Wifi Pro.
To check the improvement of having it, I did speed tests with a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in the main rooms of my house. The comparison will be between the Wifi Pro, the Google Nest Wifi I had before and the carrier’s own router, in my case Vodafone.
The main problem I was facing was not the signal strength of the router, but the range of the router. On the third floor, I didn’t have the speed I needed, so I installed a Google Nest Wifi with a few satellites.
Ground floor
Downstairs, we see how the Wifi Pro dramatically improves speed next to the router, located in the living room. It is striking that it reaches 650 Mbps when the rate I contracted is 600 Mbps.
living room
Vodafone: 500 Mbps
Google: 550 Mbps
WiFi Pro: 650 Mbps
dispatch 2
Vodafone: 200 Mbps
Google: 95 Mbps
Wi-Fi Pro: 180 Mbps
cocine
Vodafone: 300 Mbps
Google: 180 Mbps
Wi-Fi Pro: 210 Mbps
First floor
On the first floor, we saw a huge speed increase in my office, but also a decrease in the bedroom. It’s curious because it’s the area of the house, after the living room, where there is better coverage, being directly above the router.
dispatch
Vodafone: 46 Mbps
Google: 86 Mbps
Wi-Fi Pro: 170 Mbps
Bedroom
Vodafone: 200 Mbps
Google: 220 Mbps
Wi-Fi Pro: 150 Mbps
Second floor
On this floor, there is only the studio where I record, and my partner’s studio, where he paints. As you can see, the speed of the Vodafone router was very low and even the Nest Wifi did not noticeably increase. It was the Wifi Pro that allowed us to use the internet in this area the same way we use it in the rest of the house.
Study
Vodafone: 8 Mbps
Google: 22 Mbps
Wi-Fi Pro: 100 Mbps
As you can see, in general the improvement is noticeable, but it is true that we do not see a speed increase in all rooms compared to other systems.
It caught my attention that Google Nest Wifi Pro can give out such a strong signal with just one device, without the need for a satellite.
Conclusion: more than recommended
Although 219,99$ that Google is asking for this device might seem like a very high number, it’s not. Even the two-pack for $329.99 It is reasonably priced for what it offers.
And if you live in a house with two or more floors, having something like this is almost mandatory.
