Although Xiaomi officially arrived in Europe in 2017, there are those who had already got their hands on their phones before thanks to online import stores. During this time, the Chinese giant has established itself, becoming one of the best-selling mobile phone brands, whether through its official sales channels, other distributors or imports. This point is important because depending on where you buy your Xiaomi phone, you will find different versions of MIUI, mainly European Version, Global Version, Chinese Version or Global ROM. If you are not very clear about their differences, continue reading because there are important nuances such as coverage, languages or software, among others.
How do I know which version of MIUI is on my Xiaomi phone?
Although where you purchased your Xiaomi phone may serve as a warning of what you may find – example: while you will undoubtedly find the relevant version for your country on the official website or a Xiaomi store, in this case it would be the European version; if you’re pulling from Aliexpress or an eBay seller, the source isn’t so clear – you can determine your phone’s ROM version as follows:
Come in ‘Settings‘ > ‘my device‘ and there look for the ‘MIUI version’ section and pay attention to the code that appears. We are particularly interested in the fourth and fifth letters.
These are the ones that tell you which version of MIUI you have, namely:
- IM: Global
- EU: European (EEA)
- CN: China
- In India
- RU: Rusa
- Identity card: Indonesia
- MX: Mexico
Let’s see this with an example: the photograph you see below these lines.
The MIUI version is QFNEUXM, so following the previous indications, it would be the European version. And all the rest? The meaning of the rest of the letters of the MIUI version is:
- The first of the letters indicates the Android version which the ROM is based on. So, ‘R’ means we are facing the version of Android 11, ‘P’ corresponds to Android Pie, ‘L’ to Android Lollipop, etc.
- The second and third letters designate what phone is this version for because each phone has its own. For example, Xiaomi Mi 11 is a “KB”, a Mi 10 with the letters “JB” or a Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G with the letters “EM”.
- As we already know, the fourth and the fifth correspond to the region to which each ROM is directed.
- The sixth and seventh letters refer to the sim card status. Thus, ‘XM’ indicates that it is unlocked (it is an abbreviation for Xiaomi), but for example one could also find ‘VF’ for Vodafone or ‘OR’ for orange.
In other words, QFNEUXM comes to say that the device has a ROM based on Android 10, it is the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite with a European and free version.
Differences between the main versions of MIUI
global version
The global version ofGlobal Version‘ (be careful, do not confuse Global ROM or Global ROM, which is different as we will see later) is the designed for the international market, so it has all languages and Google services, including its Google Play Store, Maps or YouTube. Of course, it integrates Xiaomi’s own applications and its customization layer.
It’s important to point out one hardware-related aspect (since other software-related differences can be fixed by installing things following ): offers support for the 800 Mhz frequency range or B20 band, one of those used in Europe for the 4G, which means you can connect to this network and benefit from its coverage
The Global version is the basis for other ROMsincluding the European one.
chinese version
The Chinese or CN version is the one designed for China and other countries on the continent (but not all of them, we have already seen that there are others for markets as important as India) and includes two languages, Chinese and English.
in the Chinese version you will not find google services neither its stock apps nor you will be able to download apps from its store, as it is not present either. However, if you opt for this version or if you already have it on your phone, you will still have to install the Google Installer APK to have the Play Store and download the appropriate Global ROM for your Xiaomi phone to install it on your terminal .
Regarding the hardware, in this version there is no support for the B20 band for 4G and here there is nothing you can do. It can be a problem in terms of coverage, but it’s not the only band or all the telecos they operate on it, so in the most favorable case you cannot suffer from its absence.
Global ROM
This Global ROM deserves special attention because it may be confused with the Global version, but no: the Global ROM is a CN version with a Custom ROM, which means in practice that it can have Spanish language and all Google services available.
The two extras seem delicious for a potential person who is going to buy a phone with this version in Europe, but we insist: it is a Chinese version with adapted software, but the hardware remains the same
That being said, we will also be interested to know what type of custom rom do you have installed And if the phone bootloader is unlocked, essential in case of serious software failures.
european version
As we mentioned in the section on the global ROM, this is the basis for other versions, as is the case of the one that governs our territory: the European or the EEA, which differs in that Sens It is adapted to the regulations and legislation of the European Union. This is the case of the volume limit and, for example, in the Indian version, it allows to increase the volume of the sound.
Which version is the best?
There is a fundamental premise to answer this question: it will depend on where you live.
In general the global ROM is the most interesting if you live outside of Asia for features like its support for frequency bands, languages, and Google services.
It is also the most complete because it is exempt from regulations specific to the legislative constraints of certain territories and it is drawn up before those which leave there (for example that European).
Now this has also a B side: when buying from authorized channels in Europe, it is normal to obtain the European version and the three-year European guarantee is applied, by resorting to import you can find other versions such as the global , but at the cost of having to resort to the specific store for after-sales support, lower warranty and possibly customs fees.
In addition, buying a Xiaomi mobile in China compared to buying it in Europe can also mean that there are functions not availableas is the case with mobile payments via NFC.
