The personalization of our devices is one of the most important functions of our daily lives. Making and configuring our iPhone or Apple Watch to be comfortable with it is essential. Not only visually, but functionally. And that’s only growing considering the customization options that have been added for a few years now. However, the Apple Watch doesn’t yet have third-party support for watch faces
Third-party watch faces don’t seem to be coming to the Apple Watch
Apple provides all users with a set of customizable spheres themselves. A watch face is a pattern on the Apple Watch home screen. A few years ago the term Complication was introduced, which was nothing more than a space to place information that may come from third-party applications. However, the faces are still exclusive to Apple and are updated from watchOS to watchOS. Also, with the release of new watches, there are exclusive watch faces for each model.
In an interview by Swiss media Tages-Anzeiger with VP of Technology Kevin Lynch and product marketing employee Deidre Caldbeck they addressed the issue of third spheres. Why can’t developers configure or design custom spheres so that users can install them as if they were an app? The answer they give is simple for them, difficult for users to understand.
Lynch and Caldbeck state that Apple puts a lot of effort into all areas clock to make them all run smoothly and simply. They also emphasize that every sphere they design is made with future features of watchOS, think about the future possibilities that these spheres may have for the user. Moreover, Apple executives are hiding behind the fact that developers you can now configure part of the spheres thanks to Complications, even more now with the arrival of widgets in watchOS 10.
