There’s less left for Google to catch up with Apple in something as simple as finding our lost devices. Although Android phones already have a “Find my device” function, this one is somewhat short.

Anyone who owns an iPhone with accessories like AirPods, iPads, or Macbooks knows how powerful its “Find My” feature is for finding lost items. Apple does this by creating a “private network” made up of the millions of devices it sells, so it was always going to be difficult for Google to offer something like this.
How your Android mobile will know where it is
The good news is that Google is finalizing the details to launch a renewed version of the “Find my device” function, which will be more precise and will allow us to find not only our mobile, but also other accessories that become compatible.
Of course, the direct consequence is that our mobile will obtain more private information about the sites we visit than ever before. As part of the new feature, Android phones will not only record the last location they visited, but will also send that information to Google’s servers.
There is no bad motivation behind this data record. It is simply so that, if we lose our mobile, we can consult the application or the official site of “Find my device” and see exactly where it is, something that will be ideal to find it quickly or know if it was stolen. It will work even if the mobile is switched off or out of coverage, unlike the current function which only indicates the position of the mobile if it is switched on and can send the position.
This location data will be encrypted, so that no one else can know our location at any time. However, it is clear that Google expects some controversy over this function, and that is why it has implemented a way to avoid this data recording.
A new option in the “Find my device” section in Android security settings has already appeared in the latest version of Google Play Services, 22.50, which has not yet reached all users; We will only have to deactivate this option so that our position is not saved, taking into account that the search function of the device will be less precise and will not work with the mobile turned off.
