We know that Android 12 has been bringing a game mode for a long time, and we have even seen some of its functions in previous betas, but until now Google had not told us much about it. At the Google for Games Summit, the company gave more details about how will be the mode of games android 12.
The Google for Games event gave enough of itself in terms of Android 12 news. On the one hand, we learned that we can start playing while downloading a game. In addition, Google officially presented the game mode and showed us that there will be three performance profiles for each game: high performance, standard or battery saver.
This will be Android 12’s game mode
Google finally introduced us to the game mode, a series of optimizations and a floating bar designed to improve the gaming experience and offer quick access to some useful functions during games. Many manufacturers have already created their own tool for a similar purpose, but Android hasn’t had anything similar until now.
During a session at the Google for Games event, we were able to see said tool panel and the floating bar. There is no change regarding the tools to display on the floating bar, and that you can activate and deactivate in the options: these are the same as we saw in the beta of Android 12.
From the game mode control panel, you can choose which tools you want to display in the floating bar. This floating bar can be moved and minimized, showing on one side of the screen. Here are the available tools:
-
Screenshot. One button to easily take a screenshot while you play.
-
Recording. One button to use Android’s built-in recorder and record the game session.
-
FPS. Activates a frame-per-second counter superimposed on the screen.
-
Do not disturb. Activate or deactivate do not disturb mode on your mobile.
However, the most relevant novelty we got from this session of Google for Games is the optimization for games, something that is not yet functional in the beta versions of Android 12. This optimization will be available for games that include support for Android games mode and can be configured separately for each game. There will be a exclusive section for this in the supported game settings.
As for the performance modes available, there will be three, allowing you to choose between prioritizing performance or power saving. This power saving works separately from Android power saving mode. These will be the three supported modes:
-
Performance. It will prioritize increasing in-game performance and reducing latency, even though it consumes more battery in return.
-
Standard. No changes are applied to game performance, being the most balanced option between performance and battery usage.
-
Energy saving. It will optimize game performance to save battery power, although in return the frames per second may be reduced.
Google has indicated that Android 12’s game mode will come to a select the device list with Android 12 by the end of the year. It doesn’t appear to be an exclusive feature of the Google Pixel, but it is highly likely that it kicks off in them.
