Google has not only declared war on ad blockers, the company is now also going after cheap YouTube Premium subscriptions, the ones that have been obtained in another country through the use of a VPN.
Subscribing to a service in another country is a method used by some people to get a cheaper price, but this is generally not allowed by streaming and content platforms. Therefore, they can take action against subscribed accounts in this way, and YouTube certainly seems to do it.
These YouTube Premium subscriptions are canceled without notice
Streaming platforms generally do not have the same price in all countries around the world. For example, in a country where the average income level is lower than that of more developed countries, companies adjust the cost of their services so that they are more accessible in the local market. This means that In some countries, subscriptions are cheaper than in othersfor the benefit of the local consumer.
This has also resulted in some users from more economically developed countries using VPNs to pretend to be in one of these countries where the service is cheaper, and thus pay less for a subscription. In the case of YouTube Premium, the company seems to be aware of this and has started to cancel memberships of users who subscribed using this method
A number of users who subscribed to YouTube Premium in other countries via VPN confirmed on Reddit that their subscriptions had been cancelled, without notice nor any type of warning from the company.
Users report receiving an email from YouTube informing them that their subscription has been canceled.
Once users receive the termination email, the effect is not immediate: they will continue to receive the benefits of YouTube Premium until the next renewal date.
Not all users who subscribed to YouTube Premium in another country using a VPN lost their subscription, but the number of reports of users receiving the cancellation email is increasing. Also, for now it only seems that they apply this measure in certain countries, not globally, but this could change, YouTube could cancel subscriptions created in another country with VPN worldwide.
