YouTube has declared war on ad blockers. The company behind the video, streaming, and music platform has already taken action against ad-blocking extensions and even third-party apps, in an effort to make ad blockers useless.
However, its new strategy is even more aggressive: Ads will be integrated directly into the videosso that it is thus impossible to block them and prevent their reproduction, at least in theory.
YouTube starts embedding ads in videos to prevent users from blocking them
To implement this measure against ad blockers, YouTube is changing the way video playback (and its ads) work on the platform. Until now, videos were played as separate content from the video; these are played before, during or after the video we actually want to watch.
However, YouTube’s new idea is to embed these videos directly into the video, injecting the advertising at the server level. Therefore, ad blockers They will not be able to separate the contents and block the adThe measure was announced a few months ago, but early users are now starting to feel the effects of this major change on the plat form.
A group of Reddit users mentioned that using an extension to block ads, YouTube videos display the screen completely black for the duration of the ad. In other words, if there is a 30-second ad in the middle of the video, users see a black screen for those 30 seconds.
In a way, the ad blocker continues to work, as it seems to detect it enough to hide its content. However, It is not possible to advance the announcement and skip it. to resume the original video, this therefore always represents an interruption for the user (or multiple interruptions, in the case of videos with more than one advertisement).
Ads are one of the main sources of revenue for YouTube and Google in general. So it makes sense that the company would seek to prevent the use of ad blockers and offer users the option to subscribe to YouTube Premium to not see ads and get other benefits. Some users enjoy these benefits, others, for whatever reason, prefer not to pay, and in these cases, it is now very difficult to avoid seeing ads using tools such as extensions.
