You have 124 minutes to kill and really have nothing better to do? Then we have a…hot(?) tip for you: From today, January 2, 2024, Morbius with Jared Leto is available with a subscription on Netflix. And even though the film makes many Spider-Man fans’ spider senses ring, the story surrounding Morbius is definitely entertaining.

If you want to know what Morbius is all about: The film’s plot revolves around renowned doctor Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), who suffers from a rare blood disease that he desperately tries to cure. Morbius crosses bat DNA with human DNA and becomes a kind of blood-sucking vampire.

Morbius: First trailer for the new Marvel film with Jared Leto

At least virally *kind of* a hit

No success at the box office… : After numerous Corona-related release postponements, Morbius turned out to be a bitter disappointment among critics, viewers and at the box office: Given a budget of 75 million US dollars, Morbius was only able to gross 168 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) – pretty poor for a comic book adaptation.

…. and not even with critics and viewers: On the rating portals Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic Morbius gets an average of a meager 15 or 35 percent from critics. At first glance, viewers appear to be more generous with 71 and 67 points respectively.

However, you should note: Morbius quickly became a viral internet meme, which attracted countless shitposts from the Morbius team.Fans (so-called Morbs or Morb-Heads) entailed. The user’s review, for example, is particularly exemplary Alex, which scored an impressive five out of five on Rotten Tomatoes. Because something would definitely be lost in a translation, we deliberately decided not to:

Morbius truly has to be one of the films released in 2022 so far. Jared Leto did a job playing Morbius and the action was in the film. The film has storytelling and the CGI was animated. The side characters were along with morbius and the villain was a bad guy. The jokes were sentences. This film really is one of the films of all time, if not the last decade.

Brought to the cinemas a second time

In the wake of the Morbius memes, the ironic saying was particularly popular It’s Morbin’ Time! the round. This even went so far that Sony released Morbius in US cinemas for a second time after its disappointing theatrical run.

However, the re-release of Morbius due to its meme popularity was hardly profitable – like a report from Forbes revealed. For comparison, over the same weekend, Morbius grossed just $300,000 in a total of 1,037 theaters, while Top Gun: Maverick made $86 million over the same weekend (although to be fair, it was also one of the most successful films of the year).

Incidentally, Morbius also caused serious discussions because of one extremely out of place post-credits scene, in the course of which the film is rather poorly linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Most fans agreed on this: This did more harm than good to Marvel.

If you really want to see Morbius for yourself – for whatever reason – you now have the opportunity to do so on Netflix. By the way, the next Marvel movies are in the starting blocks: Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web and Venom 3. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still a long time coming.
