While Silent Hill 2 Remake’s release date is set to be announced in the coming weeks, the new film’s 2024 Cannes Film Festival will provide an opportunity to get an exclusive look.
Yes, we’ve been hearing this for weeks, but Silent Hill 2 Remake has every chance of coming back as part of an event and revealing what everyone is waiting for: the official release date for PS5 and PC. But according to Bloober Team (Layers of Fear, Observer, The Medium), this long wait and lack of communication will quickly be forgotten. “We are not only thrilled, but also very confident about the end result” said CEO Piotr Babeno. This PS5 remake will revisit the second episode of the license, like the future feature film by Christophe Gans.
A bad image for the film Return to Silent Hill
“Return to Silent Hill” is currently showing on the Croisette, where it visibly clashes with “Mad Max Furiosa” and “Metropolis”, but is more discreet than the two films mentioned above. But thanks to Variety, one of America’s leading movie and television websites, we have a very concrete first image of this new film. And it’s more than just a cliché because it confirms that Pyramid Head will be back. Great news… but no surprise. In fact, this feature film, still directed by French filmmaker Christophe Gans, is largely based on the PS2 game Silent Hill 2. Therefore, it was impossible to ignore one of the mythical monsters of the horror license.
A worthy result? Worth watching as the image lacks consistency and seems very digital in this first image despite the use of practical effects for this iconic character. Some Internet users are also currently skeptical. In comments on ResetERA, a user feels like they’re looking at a photo for a Figma figure. And it’s not the only one. Others are hoping for a dirtier portrayal and want to wait for the final version to really judge Pyramid Head’s appearance.
A familiar and different story at the same time
For the casting, Gans hired Jeremy Irvine (Mamma Mia 2, War Horse) as James Sunderland and Hannah Emily Anderson (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Jigsaw…) as Mary Crane. “Driven by the shadows of his past, James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill to find his lost love, Mary Crane. But the small, dark and depressing town is no longer the place of his memories. There he meets characters who seem too familiar to him and who want to distract him from his search for Maria. The more he searches for Mary, the more he begins to wonder if this is still reality – or if he has fallen into Jacob Crane’s dark underworld.
The story of this new Silent Hill film suggests that Christophe Gans may be taking liberties. We’re talking about lost love here while Mary is the wife of James Sunderland. And as luck would have it, the PS5 remake will also improve story elements. Will the two stories end up being similar? We’ll have an answer in 2024, as both the game and feature film will be released this year.
