Last 2023, DC Studios closed a turbulent period with the premiere of The Flash. Although good box office numbers were expected, the film ended up being a big disappointment for the company and marked a discreet farewell to the so-called Snyderverse. However, it seems that its director has a clear understanding of the reasons for its failure.
In an interview with the Argentine media Radio TUthe director of the film Andy Muschietti shared his point of view on the performance of The Flash. According to him, one of the main reasons for its poor performance was the lack of interest of certain sectors of the target audience in the main character.
“It wasn't a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that. When you spend $200 million making a movie, Warner wants to put even your grandmother in theaters. And I discovered in private conversations that a lot of people just didn't care. “The Flash as a character matters. In particular, the two female quadrants.”
For those unfamiliar with the term “four quadrants,” it refers to a model that divides the movie audience into four broad demographic groups: men under 25, men over 25, women under 25, and women over 25 years old. According to Muschietti, the film failed to capture the attention of female audiences, which significantly affected its box office performance.
The director also pointed out other factors that contributed to the film's failure: the controversies related to Ezra Miller, public fatigue towards superhero films and the end of the Snyderverse, which made certain sectors of the audience not feel motivated to see the movie. Despite everything, Muschietti said he was proud of his work in The Flash and expressed his excitement for his next project at DC Studios: Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
