The PS2 is a console that will forever remain in the hearts of many fans. Sony is aware of this and is taking the opportunity to unveil an absolutely incredible new historical record.
We know that the PS2 is one of the best-selling consoles of all time. But to be clear: Sony has just made an announcement that impresses once again. That's just huge, especially when you compare the numbers to other consoles.
A milestone for the PS2
Now it's official: the PlayStation 2, a true video game legend, is here 160 million units sold around the world. Sony has just confirmed this figure via a website dedicated to the history of PlayStation. This new milestone cements the PS2 as the best-selling console of all time.
So far, the latest official figures have suggested this 155 million units sold. However, Jim Ryan, the former boss of PlayStation, had already mentioned earlier this year that the PS2 had exceeded the 160 million mark. Today this information is being validated by Sony.
With this performance, the PS2 continues to dominate the ranking of the most popular consoles. In second place we find the Nintendo DS 154 million copies sold. The Nintendo Switch follows closely behind 146 million sales recorded at the end of September 2024.
Can the Switch dethrone the PS2?
The Nintendo Switch is making steady progress. With its hybrid concept and its many successful games, it remains a serious challenger. However, reaching 160 million will not be an easy task. The PS2 owes its incredible success to its extensive catalog, its affordable price at the time and its integrated DVD player, a revolution in the 2000s.
The PlayStation 2 shaped the history of video games like no other. With his 160 million salesIt embodies an era when consoles were the centerpiece of living rooms around the world. More than just a machine, it has become a symbol of innovation and nostalgia for millions of gamers.
