A new Marvel Rivals leak has players worried with certain information that portends the worst for the future. Here's what we know so far.
A new leak about Marvel Rivals is causing a lot of conversation. According to information from RivalsLeaks, a loot box system was initially planned for the game, but this was abandoned before release. Although nothing is confirmed, this data has reignited the debate about monetization in online games.
Marvel Rivals could have been very different
The Marvel Rivals loot boxes would have been divided into five rarity levels: gray, blue, purple, yellow and red. The most common gray boxes offered basic rewards, such as skin recoloring. At the other extreme, red boxes, the rarest, would have enabled the purchase of high-quality cosmetics.
But that's not all. Rewards may have included emotes, player cards, sprays, and other customization items. Additionally, the system appeared to be designed to work during time-limited events, encouraging players to be active at specific times.
A complex economy to access
To unlock these loot boxes, players would need to convert in-game currencies (grids and units) into two additional currencies: Crystallization and Marscoin. These would then have been used to obtain rewards. A complex system, but reminiscent of modern monetization mechanisms in multiplayer games.
According to RivalsLeaks, These loot boxes could have been removed before the game even started. However, the insider hints that a return could potentially happen in the future. Nothing is set in stone and Marvel Rivals could still decide to incorporate this system depending on community feedback.
Despite this controversy, Marvel Rivals continues to be a hit. The game recently celebrated an impressive milestone: 20 million players. On the occasion of this event, free prizes were offered to all participants. This shows that the game knows how to attract and retain loyalty even without loot boxes.
