Cyberpunk 2077 goes a long way. A year and a half after its launch, CD Projekt RED’s futuristic FPS still doesn’t deliver the expected success. Maybe the new scripted extension can change that?
It’s time for the financial review at CD Projekt RED, and the record is mixed. While The Witcher is still an almost indecent success, Cyberpunk 2077 sales remain disappointing despite the next-gen update.
Big numbers that remain disappointing
CD Projekt got the big numbers talking while presenting its 2021 financial results. A chance to take stock of sales for a Cyberpunk 2077 that’s more playable than before months after its launch debacle. At its release, the Polish studio’s FPS had achieved a spectacular score of 13.7 million copies sold, despite the game’s quality at the time and its withdrawal from the PS Store for 6 months.
Despite everything, as of April 14, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide. If CD Projekt RED is very discreet on the subject, we imagine that the appearance of updates for the PS5 and Xbox series has given the game a small revival. If the numbers may seem almost monstrous, they are far from satisfactory. In fact, we’re far from the 30 million copies planned for the game’s first year and it’s difficult to call Cyberpunk 2077 a commercial success. Especially since The Witcher 3 sold more than the studio’s last game last year.
A Cyberpunk 2077 expansion coming next year
However, CD Projekt RED has not yet spoken its final word with the license. The animated series Cyberpunk Edgerunners is expected to hit Netflix later this year. The game, in turn, will receive additional content. The Polish studio has again confirmed that it is working on new Cyberpunk 2077 DLCs, without specifying whether there will be free content in the bundle or not.
A major expansion is also expected, which will bring a new scenario. However, we will have to wait until 2023 to discover new adventures in Night City. The developers will report on this later in the year.
