News culture “A slightly different perspective”: This action film is not a copy of John Wick, the director doesn’t budge
The recently released film “Boy Kills World” is making headlines with its brutal and particularly well-choreographed fights. Enough to merit a comparison to John Wick for many…
Karate brawl
It’s been a few days now since Boy Kills World was released in cinemas on the other side of the Atlantic: The story, It’s about a boy who, after being left to die, wants to avenge his murdered family. How ? By becoming a real killing machine as an adult, by surrounding yourself with the right people, but also by overcoming certain obstacles, such as: the fact th at he himself is… deaf and mute.
An excellent excuse to fight, and it just so happens that Boy Kills World has a lot of it, bathed in a demented tone and often full of dark humor. At the helm of the film and in the role of Boy, the protagonist, is Bill Skarsgård, known for lending his facial features most notably to the frightening clown in It. At his side Famke Janssen (Jean in the X-Men saga) or Jessica Rothe (La La Land): The trailer can be seen in our video player at the beginning of the article.
What about John Wick?
At the moment a lot of people – especially in the trade press – are to compare Boy Kills World to the John Wick saga.
In a way it’s an honor because these films are just incredible. I still think we have a slightly different perspective because we tried to make a martial arts movie where we then added weapons, whereas John Wick had weapons and then added martial arts, so to speak. And even more so towards the final episodes of the series. So yeah, I mean, they’re great action movies and top notch action movies. So if people want to compare them, that’s not a problem for me.
The filmmaker also commented further on this moment His inspiration comes particularly from films in which revenge is the key word.
One of my favorite directors is Park Chan-wook and his revenge trilogy Old Boy, Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. This is how a modern revenge film should be made. These three films blew me away from the first time I saw them and inspired me a lot.
We don’t yet know when Boy Kills World will be released in France, but the feature film is already available in the US. A broadcast date in France should not be long in coming.
