Will Beetlejuice 2 already be a pleasant surprise? In any case, excellent news reassures a little more about the way the film is being made.
It may seem unlikely, but Beetlejuice 2 is coming to French cinemas this year. A project, it has to be said, very demanding. So it is a direct sequel to the original 1988 film and we will find part of the cast including Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz), Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) and Michael Keaton (the bio-exorcist). And to keep things fresh, Tim Burton once again trusted the star of the Netflix series Wednesday, Jenna Ortega (Astrid Deetz). But also to his new wife Monica Bellucci.
Beetlejuice 2 is old fashioned, the best?
Do we make the best soup from old pots? Not always, but sometimes returning to more authentic things helps. And for Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton tuned their violins to an element. The overabundance of CGI, which can be terrible if poorly executed, is a no. The majority of what we saw had to be “handmade” or the feature would probably have failed.
The only thing we agreed on very, very early on was that if we were going to make Beetlejuice 2, I definitely didn’t want to make a film with too much technology. It had to be done by hand. What was fun back then was seeing someone in the corner think something was you. Looking at everyone in the waiting room [ndlr : la séquence où la tête du personnage rétrécit] and saying to yourself, “There are people underneath who make these things work, who try to do things well.” That’s the most interesting thing. When you can do that again after years of standing in front of a giant green screen and pretending someone is in front of you, it feels great.

Of course, this isn’t a prediction about the final quality of Beetlejuice 2, but it’s already a good start. We are now waiting to know if the writing of the script handled by the showrunners of Wednesday’s series is on track and if the film will be as extravagant as the original. Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to hit theaters in France on September 11, 2024.
