Amazon’s MMO New World has seen a huge jump in player numbers with its reboot as New World: Aeternum.
The Launch am 15. Oktober 2024 brought not only a long-awaited console version, but also numerous updates, including an improved combat system, new endgame content and crossplay.
Despite the impressive tenfold increase in player numbers, the reboot on Steam is causing divided opinions – mainly among the game’s PC veterans.
Rush of players despite criticism
With New World: Aeternum, Amazon managed to arouse the interest of many new and old players. After the numbers continued to fall for over two years and eventually leveled off at around 5,000 simultaneous players, since the relaunch up to 51,000 people at the same time traveling in the MMO.

New World: Aeternum will be released on October 15th – but what the hell is that?
Despite the initial hype, the feedback on Steam is mixed – only 65 percent of recently written Steam reviews are positive.
While some players praise the improved gameplay and new features, many long-time PC gamers feel offended by the changes.
Many long-time players who have invested hundreds of hours in the game find themselves disadvantaged by the new console adjustments and the crossplay system.
ALOHASNAKBAR, who has over 2,000 hours of playing time in New World, writes:
We (PC gamers) tested the game in beta for about two years so that console players also have the opportunity to play it. However, in order for new or additional content to be available to PC players, we will essentially need to start new accounts in order to play the game and its future updates. This is a highly unethical and shady business that Amazon Game Studios is forcing on its PC gamers.
Ano ther frequently expressed point of criticism is the introduction of the aiming system in PvP, which simplifies the flow of the game too much for some users like DinHole:
They could have just turned the game into a tab target system – the lock-on is a joke.
The game’s technology also apparently suffered due to the console version. Sixxx2brezel reports that the user interface no longer supports ultrawide monitors, while Lugg has one reduced graphics quality complained:
I don’t know what they did with this update, but it really looks 10x worse than before. Playing on the highest settings feels like playing on low settings.
Despite the many criticisms, New World: Aeternum’s potential does not go unnoticed. Above all, the positive votes emphasize that the game offers a solid foundation that could be further expanded in the future. But the question remains whether Amazon will be able to overcome the growing gap between old PC veterans and new console gamers.
