As one of McCaffrey’s employees has now confirmed, the actor died yesterday, December 17, 2023, as a result of serious cancer.
McCaffrey lent his voice to Detective Max Payne in both the Max Payne parts of Remedy and the third part of the series developed by Rockstar. In the Alan Wake games he voiced the FBI agent or detective Alex Casey, who is roughly based on the character of Payne.
McCaffrey also took on a role in 2019’s Remedy’s Control. Here he played the former Director of the Federal Bureau of Control Zachariah Trench.
But outside of video games, James McCaffrey can also look back on a long list of film productions and television series. His last series appearance was in Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and he was last seen in the cinema in A Good Woman Is Hard to Find in 2019.
McCaffrey died on Sunday, December 17, 2023, as a result of complications from multiple myeloma that he had previously been diagnosed with.
According to Remedy, Remedy is currently working on a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2. It is not yet known whether McCaffrey would have been intended as the voice of the title hero again. So far we only know that Max Payne 1 and 2 will be released together as one game.
