Alien Romulus is a hit in China
This summer of 2024 was marked by the return of the Alien saga to cinemas after seven years of absence with the release of Alien: Romulus, a spin-off between the first two works. Directed by Fede Alvarez, this new film does not reinvent the wheel, but it is clear that the formula still works and the film is enjoying some success at the box office. A success that is largely thanks to the Chinese audience.
So, as reported diversityAlien: Romulus had a very strong second weekend in China, grossing nearly $20 million. Its first weekend of operation was also very good, with an opening of around $26 million. In total, Alien Romulus has already grossed more than $73 million in China since its release on August 16, making it the second biggest Hollywood hit of the year in China, just behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom, which grossed around $134 million.
A new success for the Xenomorph
Still, according to Variety, Alien: Romulus managed to beat several promising Hollywood franchises in China in just two weeks of operation. The film thus surpasses Kung Fu Panda 4, Despicable Me 4 and Dune 2, all of which struggled to gross over $50 million on Chinese territory. Compared to the rest of the world, China is the highest-grossing country for Alien: Romulus. In total, the film has grossed nearly $230 million in the United States and abroad so far, against an estimated budget of $80 million. A success that should be further demonstrated in the coming weeks.
