Everything you should know about Kenobi

Release: When does Kenobi start?

Kenobi starts on 27. May 2022 on Disney Plus – two days after the original release date, as Ewan McGregor personally announced. Disney and Lucasfilm have now officially announced this. As usual, the episodes will be released weekly, so not all episodes will be available on May 27th, but the first two will be available.

Platform: Where is Kenobi Available?

Kenobi appears exclusively on Disney Plus – just like all other current Star Wars series. So you don’t have to count on a release on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple+ and Co.

Seasons and Episodes: How Big Will Kenobi Be?

Kenobi will have a total of one season and six episodes. After that there is actually(!) a layer in the shaft, because the project is actually as Limited Series

created. That means there shouldn’t be a season 2 or 3. Of course, it cannot be completely ruled out that Disney will upset its plans in this regard, for example if the fans are hungry for more or if Ewan McGregor is available for further seasons.

And so is Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy (via Entertainment Weekly) backtracked, revealing to Entertainment Weekly that a season 2 is already being discussed. However, since the first six episodes are self-contained, there would have to be a good reason for the story to continue. So fans have to wait and see, but the chances don’t seem too bad.

Story: What is Kenobi about?

The story of Kenobi takes place between Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith and Episode 4 – A New Hope. So we follow Obi-Wan Kenobi as he watches over young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine after the fall of the Republic and the fall of the Jedi Order. Officially there are only a few additional story details, but we already know more thanks to leaks and insiders.

Warning: the following paragraph contains spoilers

Strictly speaking, Kenobi takes place ten years after Episode 3. The action is not only supposed to play on Tatooine, Obi-Wan is also said to be leaving the desert planet in the meantime. Kenobi is hunted by the inquisitor Reva, among others, and he ends up on other planets – including Daiyu, who is supposed to be reminiscent of Hong Kong.

Hayden Christensen will appear as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader respectively, Kathleen Kennedy promises one Rematch of the Century. There should also be flashbacks to the time of the clone wars, here we should see Obi-Wan and Anakin again in the old dynamic.

Trailer: What’s currently to see about Kenobi?

Yes, on March 9th, 2022 a trailer for the Kenobi series finally came out. It shows Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) watching over a young Luke Skywalker. However, inquisitors – including Reva (Moses Ingram) – seem to be following his trail. That’s why Kenobi is probably forced to leave Tatooine and visit the planet Daiyu, among other things.

Showrunner and Director: Who is Responsible Behind the Scenes?

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s showrunner is Deborah Chow. The director has already gained extensive experience in TV and has already staged scenes for series such as Better Call Saul, American Gods, Marvel’s Jessica Jones or Fear the Walking Dead.

Chow isn’t new to the Star Wars universe, either: she previously worked with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on The Mandalorian, directing both episodes Chapter 3: The Mistake and Chapter 7: The Reckoning. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Deborah Chow would be in charge of the Kenobi series.

What are your expectations for the Kenobi series? Are you looking forward to the return of Ewan McGregor or could you do without it? Let us know in the comments!
