This year, 2024, marks ten years of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Its launch was the most controversial of the franchise due to the enormous number of bugs it brought with it. The criticism was especially harsh and thousands of players soon abandoned it. Time, updates and DLCs ended up putting it in its place: one of the best installments of Assassin’s Creed.
It’s ironic that Assassin’s Creed Unity is currently synonymous with quality and ambition on the part of Ubisoft after what happened during its launch. The vast majority of players have very positive memories (now) and dream of a delivery that has mobility that even remotely resembles it.
Assassin’s Creed Unity continues to surprise after ten years
Ubisoft’s attention to detail in Unity reached limits that no other installment in the franchise can even begin to dream of. Not even Mirage, much less the old adventures of Ezio Auditore. It is enough to remember the fire in the Notre Dame Cathedral and the invaluable role played by the scans that the company made to recreate the building in the video game.
Although it is Arno Dorian’s mobility that makes every assassin’s legs shake. The playable possibilities of parkour and combat are absurdly varied, but it is with the animations that many fans end up completely losing their minds. A recent example belongs to Reddit user u/Milkbeg, who shares the next post:
A decade later, I’m still finding murder animations I’ve never seen before.
It turns out that Ubisoft thought of all the possibilities when it came to carrying out a murder. We will agree that the situation presented by the player is not entirely natural, but even so Arno has a fluid and stylish animation to carry out a murder. “Oh, interesting, I always thought this only works on windows,” another user responds. The rest of the comments focus on asking for another similar delivery and comparing Unity with Mirage and ACIII.
The tip of a very deep and bloody iceberg
This is just one of the dozens of animations it has Assassin’s Creed Unity to murder with the hidden blade. Arno’s movements are fast, streamlined and extremely varied. The animation usually varies depending on where we attack the enemy from, our position, the speed when executing it and even the number of enemies.
And things become a crazy party when we add animations referring to combat with the different weapons we can carry, ranging from spears and swords to muskets. The video just above shows most of the animations. It’s 20 minutes and 10 seconds non-stop… and even then some animations that I have personally seen during my games are missing.
If we talk about new animations that players discover over the years, then we cannot avoid the wonderful parkour of Assassin’s Creed Unity. In this case, we are talking about such a great variety that Arno can perform different animations when crossing the same obstacle. The player Citsa realized this and shared it in a video.
There are people who have spent years exploring and perfecting their parkour in Unity. The research and level of detail on the part of Ubisoft was such that even professional athletes continue to praise the delivery after ten years. The reality is that no other video game to date has presented walking mobility as fluid, stylized and varied as this video game.
We have seen very brutal combat animations in other games like Max Payne 3Watch Dogs Legion, Saints Row (2022) y Mortal Kombat; and incredible scrolling animations in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and other Assassin’s Creeds, but never the way Unity does. For some unknown reason, Ubisoft has never tried to recreate this parkour… although a very plausible reason is that it shouldn’t exactly be cheap.
